POSITION DESCRIPTION  

Description/Primary Responsibilities:  The Mathematics Department at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in mathematics education, beginning August 31, 2009, and contingent upon availability of funding.

 

Responsibilities: Teach mathematics courses for elementary, middle, or secondary education minors and majors including the secondary school mathematics curriculum and methods course (offered once each year), or other introductory mathematics courses (average 12 hours per semester with two preparations); contribute to the further development of the department’s mathematics education programs; become actively engaged with K-12 schools, professional organizations, or other education related endeavors at the local, state, or national level; maintain a productive program of research; contribute to departmental, college, and university service activities. 

 

Qualifications: Doctorate in mathematics or mathematics education; evidence of successful college/university teaching; mathematics teaching experience at the secondary school level is desirable. 

 


 
APPOINTMENT  

Starting Date:  August 31, 2009

 

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

LOCAL INFORMATION  

Information about UW-La Crosse:  The Mathematics Department at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse has a faculty of 21 members and offers traditional undergraduate mathematics majors and minors including mathematics majors with emphases in education, applied mathematics, and statistics.  Research interests within the department include algebra, fluid dynamics, graph theory, harmonic analysis, logic, mathematics education, number theory, numerical analysis, and statistics.

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, founded in 1909, is one of 13 four-year campuses in the University of Wisconsin System. It offers approximately 80 majors, minors and special programs for undergraduates in business, education, the sciences, the arts, health science, recreation, physical education, and liberal studies. Twenty-one graduate programs are available. About 9000 students attend classes on the compact, 119-acre campus.


La Crosse (pop. 51,000) is set among scenic bluffs along the winding Mississippi River at the Minnesota/Wisconsin border.  With Minneapolis 2 1/2 hours to the northwest and Madison, Wisconsin, 2 hours to the southeast, La Crosse enjoys small-town charm with larger city benefits.  Densely-wooded coulees (gorges between bluffs), three rivers, and lush marsh provide prime locales for running, skiing, hunting, fishing, skating, boating, camping, biking and other outdoor pursuits.
