Placement Testing
The UW-System placement exams in Math and English are required for all new freshmen and some transfer students who enroll at UW-L. Placement Exams in Foreign Language also available in Spanish, German, and French.
The UW-L Department of Modern Languages now REQUIRES the Spanish placement test of all students seeking to enroll in Spanish language courses.

The UW Placement Exams are offered in two modes:
1) Regional - each spring, multiple test dates, offered at 27 different locations at UW System schools, dates may differ by school, all tests are sent to UW Center for Placement Testing in Madison for central processing, the UWCPT then sends results to each school.
2) Residual, sometimes called local or institutional testing, only for currently enrolled or admitted students at UW-L.

Registration Information/Test Dates: The UW-L Admissions Office mails out Regional Placement Testing information each spring after students have been accepted to the university.

ID Requirements: Photo ID is required.

Estimated Length of each Exam:
* English - 90 minutes
* Math - 90 minutes
* Foreign Language - 60 minutes

NOTE: Add approximately 20 minutes of time for completion of answer sheets and survey prior to testing.

Special Information: Students are allowed to use a non-graphing calculator on the Math Placement Exam.

Cost: A development fee of $25.00 for Regional Placement Testing is automatically charged to each first-year (freshmen) student's university fee statement. This fee is sent to the UW Center for Placement Testing to cover the cost of exam development.
