Instructions:
Please complete the approval form and send as a Microsoft Word e-mail attachment to Terry Beck: beck.terr@uwlax.edu The Writing Emphasis Subcommittee will review the applications and recommend approval to the General Education Committee. Once approved, you may elect to teach any of your courses in writing emphasis mode to help students meet the General Education requirements.

Participation in faculty seminar on Writing Emphasis.

An instructor who intends to teach one or more writing emphasis courses must participate in a faculty seminar offered on campus; however, instructors who have comparable background or experience may be exempted from the faculty seminar requirement.

How you will use writing.
Please select a course that you intend to teach as a writing emphasis course and answer the questions below in relation to that course. Retype the questions and attach your responses to this form.

WRITING-TO-LEARN (INFORMAL WRITING)

  1. Describe the types of informal writing assignments.
  2. Explain how the informal writing will enhance students' learning and thinking in the course.
  3. Indicate the frequency of the informal writing tasks.
  4. Describe how you will manage the informal writing throughout the course (e.g., to what extent you will read & give feedback, whether students will read one another's informal writing, etc.)
  5. Describe the guidelines and criteria for evaluating students' informal writing.

FORMAL WRITING

  1. Describe the formal writing assignment(s) that will constitute the 10 or more polished pages of writing.
  2. Indicate the audiences that students will address and the stylistic conventions they will follow in the formal writing.
  3. Describe the models and examples of formal writing that you will provide students.
  4. Describe the types of feedback students will receive.
  5. Describe the guidelines and criteria for evaluating students' writing that you will provide them.

EXAMPLES OF COURSE MATERIAL

Please attach the following material:

  1. A copy of the material you provide students at the beginning of the semester which describes the writing emphasis aspects of the course and explains the distinction between formal and informal writing.
  2. A copy of the typical formal writing assignment that you will use in the course.
