Faculty members are approved
by the General Education Committee to teach courses that satisfy the
general education writing emphasis requirement. Approval involves two
parts:
- Instructors are required to complete a faculty seminar on designing,
using, and evaluating writing in the classroom. Instructors who
have comparable background and experience may be exempted from the
seminar requirement.
- Faculty complete an instructor approval
form in which they describe various ways they will use writing
in a particular class. The Writing Emphasis Subcommittee reviews
these and recommends approval of the instructor to the General Education
Committee. Once an instructor is approved or "certified" by this
procedure, he or she may elect to teach any course in a writing
emphasis mode without further approval of the General Education
Committee.
