Web Development

The World Wide Web is a primary tool for information at UW-L. Though diverse, UW-L departments and programs should incorporate a few common elements into their web page designs to add continuity to all UW-L pages and to improve the quality of online viewers' experiences. To better accomplish this, please follow the guidelines presented below for UW-L web page navigation.

Standards

  1. Each page should include a title that distinguishes it from other UW-L web pages.
  2. All pages should have an official UW-L logo with a link to the UW-L home page. The logo (like all other graphics) should include an alt tag.
  3. Each web page should have a link to the page or pages from which viewers arrived. For example, a faculty member's page should have a link back to the department web page.
  4. Each page should contain internal navigation links to the related pages within that page's program or area.

Recommended practices

  1. Include links to other UW-L web pages of interest to viewers.
  2. Viewers will appreciate having links to off-campus sites (e.g. professional organizations) that are affiliated with your page.
  3. Search capabilities may be added to your site to help viewers quickly find specific information.
  4. An index or directory is useful if your site uses multiple pages
  5. If you have any online forms that your visitors may need to use, have an index page to list them all and be sure to link that page to a "Forms" link or button in your navigation bar on all of your site pages.
