Midwest Numerical Analysis Day 2016 (MWNADay 2016)

Midwest Numerical Analysis Day 2016

The Midwest Numerical Analysis Day is a regional forum to exchange ideas in numerical analysis, scientific computing, and related areas. The conference has a rich history and has run for more than 20 years. The target audiences include both faculty members and graduate students from universities across the Midwest.

Invited Speakers and Abstracts

Computing Spectra without Solving Eigenvalue Problems
Dr. Douglas Arnold
Institute of Mathematics and its Applications
School of Mathematics
University of Minnesota

Abstract: The puzzling phenomenon of wave localization arises in many physical and mathematical contexts. Its applications range from the quantum mechanics of electrical conduction through the design of optical devices to the construction of noise abatement systems, to name but a few. Although studied by physicists and mathematicians for the better part of a century, localization of eigenmodes is still not fully understood nor controlled. In this talk we will describe recent major strides which have been made towards a comprehensive theory. In particular, it is now possible to predict the spectrum--both the eigenfunctions and the eigenvalues--of a large class of elliptic PDE, such as Schrodinger operators with random potentials. The talk will feature numerous numerical simulations which have played a crucial role in guiding our understanding, validating theoretical results, and pointing to mysteries as yet unexplained.

Structure Preserving DG Methods for Fokker-Planck-type Equations
Dr. Hailiang Liu
Department of Mathematics
Iowa State University

Abstract: Kinetic Fokker-Planck equations arise in many applications, and thus there has been considerable interest in the development of accurate numerical methods to solve them. The peculiar feature of these models is that the transient solution converges to certain equilibrium when time becomes large. For the numerical method to capture the long-time pattern of the underlying solution, some structure preserving methods have been designed to preserve the entropy dissipation law, the positivity and the steady states at the discrete level. I shall explain the main ideas and challenges through several model equations in different applications. Numerical results are reported to illustrate the capacity of the proposed algorithms.

High Order Numerical Methods for Convection Dominated Problems
Dr. Chi-Wang Shu
Division of Applied Mathematics
Brown University

Abstract: Convection dominated partial differential equations are used extensively in applications including fluid dynamics, astrophysics, electro-magnetism, semi-conductor devices, and biological sciences. High order accurate numerical methods are efficient for solving such partial differential equations, however they are difficult to design because solutions may contain discontinuities and other singularities or sharp gradient regions. In this talk we will survey several types of high order numerical methods for such problems, including weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) finite difference methods, WENO finite volume methods, discontinuous Galerkin finite element methods, and spectral methods. We will discuss essential ingredients, properties and relative advantages of each method, and comparisons among these methods. Recent development and applications of these methods will also be discussed.
