Temples & Tombs of the Americas  

Students entering grades 4–6

Discover the unique cultures of the Maya, Inca, and Aztecs of Mesoamerica and South America. These early Americans had spectacular buildings, written languages, and complex warrior rituals. Hands-on activities will include writing hieroglyphics, making a mask, and more! Cancellations prior to June 29 will receive a full refund minus a $40 cancellation fee. No refunds for cancellations after June 29.

Introduction to Archaeology

Students entering grades 5–9

Explore MVAC’s Archaeology Lab and work with artifacts recovered from area excavations as an introduction to the science of archaeology. Discover how the first Native Americans in Wisconsin survived using the area’s natural resources. Students must take this class in order to attend the Middle School Field Experience. This program takes place in the classroom.  It does not include excavation activities. Cancellations prior to June 29 will receive a full refund minus a $40 cancellation fee. No refunds for cancellations after June 29.

Middle School Field Experience

Students entering grades 5–9

The workshop is full. Please add your name to the waiting list. We will contact people on the wait list (in order of sign-up) to offer seats that become available due to cancellations.

Take your excitement for archaeology into the field! Students who have taken MVAC’s Introduction to Archaeology class in the past can join a La Crosse area project. Participants will work alongside professional archaeologists in the field. Activities may include shovel testing or small-scale excavations. Weather may require alternate activities. Cancellations prior to June 29 will receive a full refund minus an $80 cancellation fee. No refunds for cancellations after June 29.

Wednesday–Thursday, July 18–19, 2018 | 9 a.m.–3 p.m. | 312 Wimberly Hall, UWL

MULTI-AGE EVENTS

Public Archaeology Field Schools (3 and 5 day experiences)

High School & Adult

This multi-day field and lab experience is a well-rounded opportunity for those who want to learn about the process of archaeology. Work alongside professional archaeologists on an actual archaeological excavation and survey work. Lab work may include washing and sorting ceramics, stone tools, and other remains. An experimental archaeology component may explore making stone tools and using an atlatl (spearthrower). Optional lab hours and local field trips will be available after regular field school hours. No previous experience is necessary.

This experience is open to high-school students through adults. Fee includes a one-year MVAC membership. Supervised dorm facilities are available for high-school students at an additional cost of $225 for 3 days and $335 for 5 days. Cancellation prior to June 15 will receive a full refund minus a $100 cancellation fee. No refunds for cancellations after June 15.

Continuing Education and Extension scholarships for most summer Youth Programs (excluding Public Archaeology Field Schools-multi-age) are available. Funds are awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis to families with less than $40,000 annual income. Scholarships are good for one program per year and do not include supply/equipment fees. Print a Scholarship application form or call 608.785.6500 or conted@uwlax.edu for more information.

Continuing Education and Extension Scholarships are available for financially disadvantaged students. Funds are awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis. Scholarship applications are accepted until scholarship funds have been depleted. A minimum payment is due at time of registration.

Continuing Education scholarship:

You must complete the scholarship application form and attach:

  • First page of your most recent Federal Income Tax Form (child must be listed as exemption) or letter of explanation if one was not filed. This requirement may be waived if you provide a letter from child's school indicating the child received *free* meals at school. Once this is verified, you are responsible for 25% of the tuition fee for one program, payable at time of registration, not including supply/equipment fees.
  • Student's current grade report (must be in good academic standing)

Incomplete applications will not be processed. Notification of scholarship decision and registration instructions will be sent out approximately 3–4 weeks after application received.

Limited to scholarship fund availability.

Everyone is expected to pay at least 25% (rounded to the nearest dollar) of the cost of the program. Scholarships are good for one Continuing Education youth program per year only and does not include supply/equipment fees. Scholarships are not available for programs $300 or more.

MVAC scholarship: 

Mississippi Valley Archaeology Center may be able to offer several students financial assistance to attend our youth programs. Scholarships will be awarded based on interest in archaeology, financial need and grade point average.
