Activate NetID account

What is a NetID?

UWL NetID is a username to log into most UWL technology services.  This can include:

  • Campus Wireless Network & Network Authentication
  • Desire2Learn (D2L)
  • ITS Computer Labs and Pay-for-Print
  • Qualtrics
  • WINGS
  • Classroom Technology Podiums
  • Library Services (Online Databases like Ebscohost and ProQuest)
  • And more...

A NetID is not the same as Email Address.  Although username is the same for both systems, they can store passwords (and password expiration) separately.  Visit the password reset utility for password-related issues.

Changing a password

Please note: While EagleApps (email) and NetID accounts are different, both passwords can be changed at once by using the password reset utility.

When changing a password, please be sure to follow the Strong Password guidelines listed on that site. 

In order to activate your NetID Account, please visit the Activate NetID Account, and type yes to start activating your account. Default username and password information can be found here

The Password Management Page also allows students to reset their NetID password, unlock their NetID account, and recover their password.

If you choose to bring a printer to campus, please keep all wireless printing settings off. Printer wireless signals can interfere with WIFI access for other students. Printing services can also be found on campus by utilizing Pay-For-Print in residence halls, Murphy library, and various campus labs.

Full-time students can purchase software developed by Adobe, Autodesk, IBM SPSS, Microsoft, Nuance and more at reduced prices from the Wisconsin Integrated Software Catalog (WISC) at www.wisc.edu/wisc.

Gaming consoles in residence halls

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse does not encourage students to use the campus network connection in order to play video games or take advantage of other network functions currently available through gaming consoles, but we do understand that many students now own and use their gaming consoles in their daily lives.  We do not support any issues you may encounter while playing video games or using gaming consoles for any reason in the residence halls.  Also, we do not guarantee the network connection speed or quality gaming consoles receive in the residence halls , especially during academic hours.  The campus network and internet connection received in the residence halls to be used first and foremost for the completion of academic related work and research.  That being said, below you will find information regarding connecting some of the most popular gaming consoles to the campus network.

Although all recent gaming consoles come with the capability of being connected to a wireless network, no current gaming consoles support the authentication procedure used on our campus network. Keep in mind, you are forbidden to use a router or access point in the residence halls (wired or wireless).  Violation of this rule will result in the device being confiscated by Information Technology Services or Residence Life Information Services

Maintaining a healthy computer

ITS encourages safe, virus free, computing.  Without an antivirus software your computer can become severely infected. These infections can install programs, steal information, slow down, and limit your access to the internet and other aspects of your computer. ITS recommends that all computers have an antivirus installed before using the campus network.  Please note, no antivirus software is fool-proof, even with antivirus software it is still possible for your computer to become infected.

Antivirus

  • Faculty and staff have access to download Symantec Endpoint Protection on campus computers (available for Macs and PCs)
    • New computers are deployed to faculty and staff with Symantec Endpoint Protection already installed and configured
    • Symantec Endpoint Protection can only be installed on campus computers from the campus network
  • UWL does not provide antivirus software for students or non-campus.  However, there are options available:

    • Microsoft Security Essentials (Windows, pre-loaded on Windows 8)
    • Avast! Free (Windows)
    • Avira Free Antivirus (Windows)
    • AVG Free (Mac and Windows)
    • ClamXav (Mac, also available on the Mac App Store)
    • Antivirus software can also be purchased from retail stores
    • Note: It is not safe to install two antivirus programs on your computer at the same time. This can interfere with all functions of your computer

Wireless Internet on campus

Wireless network options:

Guests (UWLOpen)

UWLOpen grants internet access to anyone on campus. After connecting to UWLOpen you will need to open a web browser and accept the agreement before continuing to the internet.

Students, faculty, & staff (UWLSecure/EagleNet)

The preferred network for students, faculty, and staff with a UWL NetID.

  • UWLSecure is faster than UWLOpen.
  • UWLSecure encrypts all network traffic to provide a safer network experience. 
  • UWLSecure provides a persistent connection to the internet and does not require you to accept an agreement each time it is used.

To use UWLSecure:

  1. Select UWLSecure from the list of available wireless networks 
  2. Open a web browser and try to visit any website 
  3. When prompted, login with your UWL NetID 
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to run the tool that configures your connection

After you have connected through UWLSecure you will be moved to a network named EAGLENET. This is normal and expected. If your connection is not automatically moved please select EAGLENET manually. This will provide you with the best wireless service on campus.

Desire2Learn (D2L)

D2L is an online course management system for professors and students to use. Please note that you will only have access to your D2L if you are enrolled in a course and  the instructor of that course has activated the course in D2L (note that some instructors may not activate their courses). Once you are enrolled in a D2L course you can login to your account using your NetID here.

File storage

ITS provides a number of ways for faculty, staff, and students to store files and data.

Network storage

  • U drive - Storage space available to all faculty, staff, and students from UWL computers.  Faculty and staff have 15 Gigabytes of available storage.  Students are allocated 200 Megabytes.  The U drive is available after logging into any UWL office, lab, or classroom computer. 
  • N drive - Departmental file storage space available to faculty and staff.  It is available when logging into office computers.
  • O drive - Also referred to as the OLF Cabinet, this is file storage that can be requested from ITS and made available to groups of faculty, staff, or students.  For more information contact the Eagle Help Desk.
  • All network storage is backed up by ITS nightly.
  • All network storage is available off campus through Virtual Desktops and through VPN.

Microsoft OneDrive

  • OneDrive is part of the Office365 Suite of applications
  • Allows faculty, staff, and students to save data via secure web-based storage
  • Since OneDrive is web based you can access the files from any device connected to the web
  • Users can share access to files and folders in their OneDrive
  • Users have the ability to save email attachments directly to your OneDrive

EagleApps

  • Google Drive, available through EagleApps, provides up to 30 Gigabytes of file storage to faculty, staff, and students.
  • Allows faculty, staff, and students to share data freely with each other and the world.
  • Tracks changes and provides version control to documents, spreadsheets, etc.
  • Available anywhere at drive.uwlax.edu.

Pay-for-Print

Pay-for-Print allows students to print to campus lab printers regardless of location or device. Need more information? Try the Pay-for-print FAQ.

In a lab?

Choose File > Print. 

Not in a lab?

Log into studentprinting.uwlax.edu/ and upload your file(s). Make sure to release print jobs before 3a.m everyday or they are automatically deleted.

Out of funds?

Pay-for-Print is connected to Campus Cash. To add funds log into UWL GET Funds  or go to the UWL Card Office in 1131 Student Union.

Prohibited activities

As a student at UWL, you are expected to be familiar with and abide by the University’s policies regarding its computing resources, including systems both inside and outside the campus which access University resources. This includes, but is not limited to, university owned hardware, electronic mail or remote logins using the University's Internet connections. In cases of irresponsible use, access privileges may be suspended. You are expected to cooperate with investigations either of technical problems or of possible unauthorized or irresponsible use as defined in the policies. Information Technology Services will investigate and document apparent or alleged violations of these policies. Cases of apparent abuse will be referred to the appropriate University officials for further investigation and possible disciplinary action. Spam mail awareness

EagleApps email filters many “Spam” or junk mail messages to the user’s trash. Occasionally spam will get through the filter and into the user’s inbox. It is important that students are cautious of opening suspicious email attachments, especially from unknown senders. In addition, students should never submit their UWL username and password to unknown or non-campus related websites. Information Technology Services will never request a username and password in email or direct students to non-UWL website that requests this information. ITS always provides campus contact information in any of their official correspondence.
