Multicultural Business Scholars Program

OMSS UPDATE COVID-19

Based on UWL’s decision to close campus and go to an online class platform for the remainder of the semester, the Office of Multicultural Student Services will have no in-office staff until further notice and will not be accepting any face-to-face appointments or walk-ins.

Our office building is locked to the public as of March 18. We are currently working on sending our students a message outlining ongoing support for the remainder of the semester. For updated campus information pertaining to COVID-19, please utilize UWL’s COVID-19 homepage.

We will strive to provide the best service and advocacy to our students and families during this time. In lieu of phone calls, please send an email to omss@uwlax.edu with your questions or concerns. We appreciate your patience during this time. Thank you.

In solidarity,

OMSS Staff

The Multicultural Business Scholars Program (MBSP) was created to help improve the recruitment, retention, and graduation of underrepresented students pursuing a major in business at UWL. Through a comprehensive four-year plan, and partnership with the College of Business Administration, scholars receive academic and personal support while being provided the opportunity to build relationships with their peers and faculty.

Students who are enrolled in the program take Economics 110 and Economics 120 as a cohort. In addition, they take ACCT 221/222 together. They receive mentoring and advising from faculty advisors and are connected to a staff member in the office of Multicultural Student Services. The Multicultural Business Scholars Program offers a personal approach to advising, academic support, leadership opportunities, and career development that is unmatched.

Why MBSP?

The Multicultural Business Scholars Program (MBSP) offers a more personal approach to advising, academic support, leadership opportunities and career development for multicultural students majoring in business at UWL. In addition, it allows students to connect with other multicultural students majoring in business, receive mentorship, and navigate the complexities and nuances of navigating a major in a business field (accounting, economics, finance, information systems, international business, management, and marketing).

Program History

The Multicultural Business Scholars Program (MBSP) was created as a partnership between the Office of Multicultural Student Services and the College of Business Administration in 2014.  OMSS noticed that many students declaring a business major entering the university after their third semester, would either change majors or leave the college altogether. As a way to curb this, the program focuses on providing mentorship from faculty members and peer mentors for students majoring in business.

Students enroll in the program and take Economics 110 and 120 as a cohort. In addition, they take ACCT 221 & 222 together. They receive mentorship and advising from faculty advisors. They also become connected to a staff member in OMSS. The program strives to offer a personal approach to advising, academic support, provide leadership opportunities, and professional development.

The ultimate goal of the program is to improve the recruitment, retention, and graduation of underrepresented students pursuing a major in business in UWL.
