UW-L Theatre presents the play 'Detroit;' talk on 'Trash on Stage: Green Practices in the Arts' set

An expert on "“green” practices in scenic design will talk about green techniques in theatre design, including techniques she used designing the set of UW-L's Department of Theatre Arts’ production "Detroit."

Guest scenic designer Steen Mitchell, an expert on "green” practices in scenic design, will use green techniques in her design for the Department of Theatre Arts’ production of "Detroit." Set in a series of backyard barbeque dinners, "Detroit" is a comedy about people in a failing suburb who awkwardly attempt to achieve picture-perfect lives. Show times for "Detroit" are  7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18;  Saturday, Oct. 19; and Thursday, Oct. 24, through Saturday, Oct. 26. Matinee performances are at  2 o'clock  Sunday, Oct.  20 and 27,  in Toland Theatre, Center for the Arts. Mitchell will present Trash on Stage:  Green Practices in the Arts” at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, in the Toland Theatre, Center for the Arts. The presentation is open to the public. A reception to meet the designer will follow the presentation. Mitchell earned a master of fine arts degree in scene design from the University of Oregon in Eugene, where she lives and works.  She brings expertise in environmentally sustainable or "green" practices in scenic design. Tickets for "Detroit" go on sale at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 14.  Box office hours are 1 to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays, and one hour before show times. Tickets are $5 for UW-L students, $14 for seniors and other students, and $16 for others. Call 608.785.8522.
