A UW-La Crosse alum is helping NASA uncover the mysteries of Mars.

Andrea Connell, ’08, is part of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, which has helped oversee planning and operations for the Mars Perseverance rover.

Perseverance, which launched last July and landed on Mars’ Jezero Crater on Feb. 18, is collecting an assortment of information about the Red Planet — everything from rock and soil samples to potential signs of ancient life.

The mission includes testing various technologies on Mars, laying the groundwork for the first human exploration of the planet.

“We've already seen multiple flights from the helicopter Ingenuity, proving that we can fly in the very thin Martian atmosphere,” explains Connell, who will discuss her work Wednesday, June 23, during the UW-La Crosse Alumni Associations’ What’s New Wednesdays series. “We’ve also taken a lot of science observations and are looking forward to starting our sample-caching activities soon.”

Initially, Connell contributed to the Perseverance mission as a software engineer, creating tools for the scientists and engineers on the operations team.

Now that the spacecraft has landed, she has joined the operations team, which is designing and communicating Perserverance’s daily itinerary. Connell structures the schedule so the rover has enough time and power to complete its activities.

“I love that every day brings a new challenge,” she explains. “I’m constantly learning and have a big team to work with to understand different facets of the rover and of the operations process.”

Connell says she uses skills she learned as a computer science major at UWL daily.

The Holmen High School graduate came to UWL as an undeclared major with no programming experience.

When she left four years later, she had found her calling and career, accrued valuable professional experience, and received multiple job offers.

“The professors and staff in the Computer Science Department were very encouraging, and pairing my classes with real-world experience from a part-time programming job was absolutely fundamental to my career,” she notes. “When I look back at my time at UWL, I realize another experience that I didn’t appreciate at the time: learning how to push myself outside of my academic comfort zone. When I first arrived at UWL, I didn't know how to handle the feeling of being in over my head in classes. I had to learn that it’s OK to struggle, how to ask for help and how to look for additional resources.”

Connell went on to earn her master’s degree from the University of Hawaii and to have a summer internship with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Her first full-time job after graduate school was with Amazon at its Seattle headquarters. She worked there three-plus years and enjoyed it, but always kept one eye on NASA.

She rejoined the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in 2015 and has worked on the Deep Space Network, the Cassini Mission to Saturn and now the Perseverance rover.

Connell credits the versatility of her computer science degree for helping her land her dream job.

“Over my career, I realized that you can apply a computer science degree to almost any discipline,” she says. “So you might as well use it for something you are really passionate about.”

How to watch

Andrea Connell will discuss her work on the Mars Perseverance rover at 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 23, during the UWL Alumni Associations’ What’s New Wednesdays series. The program is free. Click here to register.

It’s not often you get a do over — especially in the military.

But 1st Lt. Alastair Keys did. He went from an already amazing second place to first in the country in one of the toughest, most grueling competitions in the military.

Keys, ’17, and his competition partner, 1st Lt. Vince Paikowski, captured first place in the 37th annual Best Ranger Competition at Fort Benning, Georgia, a national U.S. Army contest held in April. The 60-hour, 60-mile competition, originally created three decades ago to salute the best two-man buddy team in Ranger Regiment at Fort Benning, now determines the best two-person team from the entire Army. As Team 34, they took over the top spot on the first day of competition and never gave it up.

“It feels great to win the competition,” says Keys, an active-duty infantry officer assigned to 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment. “We came in with a game-plan and executed it well. Our coaches and training prepared us very well.”

With last year’s competition called off due to COVID-19, Keys has been No. 2 and No. 1 in the last two competitions. While his mindset remained the same, he says the biggest difference in the 2021 race was the previous experience and knowing to physically prepare sooner.

“Starting sooner allowed us to identify each other as partners sooner and build a larger cardio base coming into the train-up, which meant we could work up to a higher peak mileage week,” he explains. “We have better resourcing here at Regiment as well, which translates to more range time and more time to work on tactical skills.”

Keys and Paikowski started training in November. In January it became their full-time job.

“From January on, we were training from about 6:30 a.m.-5 p.m. every day,” he notes. “The mornings were mostly physical training with afternoons spent either at the range or working on tactical skills.”

While Keys faced nutrition challenges in the race three years ago, competing so strenuously that his hunger went away, he and his partner were prepared this time. They ate and hydrated early and often, staying ahead on keeping their bodies fueled with feeding windows set in advance and sticking to them.

Keys knew Paikowski ,an alum of Marquette University’s ROTC program, from large training events, but the two never directly competed. They re-engaged in Ranger Regiment, knowing they wanted to partner and compete together.

“I knew going in that he was extremely mentally tough and the fittest man I know with the work ethic and competitive drive to back it up,” says Keys.

Looking ahead, Keys hasn’t ruled out another run. He says it’s important to continually test yourself and compete at a high level.

“Taking part in the event is a great way to test all of your training — not only your fitness, but marksmanship and Ranger tactical skills as well,” he notes. “You have to very well-rounded to win.”

With teamwork a huge part of the competition, Keys says he would only compete again if he has the right teammate.

McKenna and Lauren Gruber have much in common.

The second cousins both attended UW-La Crosse. They both majored in biology and minored in Spanish. They both completed UWL’s Physician Assistant Program and now work in cardiology. And they both had amazing grandfathers for whom they have created a scholarship.

“We were both scholarship recipients during undergrad, and after graduation from PA school, we wanted to give back to the institution that played such an integral part in our success by assisting those with the same desire for a healthcare career,” says McKenna, ’16, who lives in Scottsdale, Arizona. “Given our family connection is via our grandfathers, we thought a memorial scholarship in their name would be fitting.”

The Nodz and Peewee Gruber Memorial Scholarship will be awarded annually to a sophomore, junior or senior planning to pursue a career in healthcare. Special consideration will be given to students interested in a career as a PA and majoring or minoring in a foreign language.

Kenneth Gruber (nicknamed Nodz for his tendency to nod off) and Glenn Gruber (nicknamed Peewee since he was the shortest boy in the family) were brothers who grew up in Durand, a small town about 80 miles northwest of La Crosse.

Kenneth worked many years at Fehr Concrete in Eau Claire, retiring in 1988. He was a longtime board member for the Eau Claire Electric Cooperative and an active member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Rock Falls.

Glenn spent his entire career at Security National Bank in Durand, rising to the position of loan officer before retiring.
Lauren says her grandfather’s impact in the community can still be felt.

“Even though he has been gone for some time now, I still hear stories from people who say, ‘If it wouldn’t have been for your grandpa, my farm would’ve went under,’ or, ‘I wouldn’t have been able to build my dream house,’” explains Lauren, ’17, who lives in Eau Claire. “That has always motivated me to give back … and McKenna came up with the great idea of doing this in memory of our grandfathers.”

Kenneth died at age 76 in 2006, and Glenn followed at age 76 in 2014.

Throughout their lives, both men struggled with health problems, leaning on the healthcare system to help manage chronic diseases.

That was even more reason, McKenna and Lauren say, to support future healthcare workers with a scholarship.

Both alums say they had a wonderful experience at UWL — something they want to make possible for future generations of health students.

“I had a great experience at UWL,” Lauren says. “I had toured bigger schools like UW-Madison and the University of Minnesota because I wasn’t sure if I wanted to go to medical school, but I wanted a smaller environment given that I went to a tiny high school.”

Added McKenna: “I believe I speak for both of us when I say that in our combined 12 years as students at UWL, our experience was excellent, which was a major factor in our decision to fund a scholarship.”
