A UW-La Crosse alum and former Green Beret with the U.S. Army Special Forces is helping rescue hundreds of Americans, Afghan soldiers and other U.S. allies from the oppressive grip of the Taliban.

Zac Lois, ’06, is a member of Task Force Pineapple, a volunteer group of veterans coordinating movements for U.S. troops and allies on the ground in Afghanistan as they attempt to navigate to safety, often under the cover of darkness.

To date, the team has helped evacuate more than 1,000 people, many of whom took flights out of Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul. However, thousands remain trapped in the capital city, which fell to Taliban in the days after the U.S. military withdrawal.

“The people we’re trying to evacuate … we’ve had relationships with them for a long time. Some of them are Afghan people we’ve served with in combat,” says Lois, who had deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan before leaving the military in 2015. “In the military, we say: ‘Leave no man or woman behind.’ That extends to this as well.”

During past deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, Lois says he built many friendships with Afghan people, as well as a deep appreciation for Middle Eastern culture.

Now an eighth grade social studies teacher in Syracuse, New York, Lois watched the upheaval in Afghanistan late this summer and knew he must get involved.

During his deployments, he had built many friendships with Afghan people, as well as a deep appreciation for Middle Eastern culture.

Teaching in a diverse school district, where many students have ties to the Middle East, served as additional motivation.

“There are so many groups represented (in our school district). A lot of the Muslim girls in particular, they’re some of my best students,” Lois notes. “When I saw the current situation in Afghanistan, I knew that I couldn’t stand in front of my classroom and look my students in the eye, knowing I could have done something about it.”

First, Lois approached Congress and the State Department for help, but he kept running into roadblocks.

That’s when he made a “Hail Mary” post on LinkedIn, hoping to recruit other veterans to join him. The post generated considerable traction, Lois says, and allowed him to link up with the existing task force of veterans.

Lois began coordinating evacuations in late August, working from a secure locaiton in the United States. He requested a leave of absence from teaching so he could continue into the fall. He doesn’t plan to stop, he says, until every U.S. ally is out of the country.

“We will keep going until every American is home,” he says, noting that additional funding is needed to cover flights and food. Donations can be made at www.operationrecovery.org.

Lois, a native of Burlington, Wisconsin, has long been passionate about history and culture.

He majored in history and was particularly influenced by Professor Víctor Macías-González — an important step to becoming an informed, global citizen, he says.

“Professor Macías-González was great,” Lois remembers. “He passed on a lot of confidence and historical knowledge.”

Lois’ background has served him well during the evacuation effort, which was modeled after the Underground Railroad that helped carry enslaved Americans to freedom in the 19th century.

“Having that understanding and knowledge of history has really helped me navigate this situation,” he says. In modern military history, “something like this has never really been done.”

Lois notes that those being evacuated are proven U.S. allies previously vetted by the State Department. Some, but not all, are being sent to the United States.

Whenever this mission ends, Lois hopes to bring the lessons he’s learned into the classroom.

“I do like to bring up my service in class — all the different cultures I’ve lived and worked with,” he says. “Those experiences show you that everyone is similar. Everyone wants the same things: good drink, good food, a better life for their children. At the core of our humanity, we’re really not that different.”

Brooks highlights alternative ways to celebrate past, present, future

With the arrival of fall and the changing of the leaves on campus, the College of Business Administration has been preparing for a large celebration of the CBA’s 50th anniversary and the official opening of our new home in Wittich Hall in the very heart of campus.

However, we've come to realize through many conversations with our alumni, emeriti, donors, and friends that now is not right time for such a celebration. So, with this note I'm letting you know that we are canceling the events surrounding the 50th scheduled for Oct. 22nd and 23.

We know this will come as a relief to some, and a disappointment to others, and we share all these emotions. However, we will be working to reschedule the Wittich Hall ribbon-cutting and the celebration of student success. Our hope is to do so some time in the spring when the flowers are blooming, the leaves return, and excitement of the semester's end is upon us.

The celebration of the 50th anniversary for the college will take a different form, and we hope you will be a participant over the next several months. We plan to release a series of videos that we've been capturing from alumni, faculty, and friends who have been sharing their memories about the CBA — its past and present, and their hopes for the future.

I hope that you'll visit the website often to see the new messages we share, and I hope that you'll also participate by sharing your own memories. To do that, please follow this link (https://www.uwlax.edu/cba/50th-anniversary/videos/) where you can find instructions about how to submit a video. We hope you will join us in celebrating the 50th in this new way.

Then, our promise to you is that sometime in the near future, as we continue to plan events when the time is right, we will have that big celebration so that we can honor the successes of the CBA as we ENGAGE > TRANSFORM > TRANSCEND in the 50 years forward. We look forward to lighting that lantern and welcoming you back.

Interim Dean of CBA

Taggert (TJ) Brooks

Alums offer advice, help for women

When UWL alums Abby Green, ’08, and Amy Kiefer, ’10, had children, they would have loved to have easy access to more information about the changes they were experiencing. Now, they’re helping other women facing that same experience.

The two have started numerous initiatives to help women through the challenging changes of pregnancy, motherhood and more. One is the HERself podcast.

“There was a void in the podcast industry of real conversations on becoming a better mother, partner, individual and shining in the titles we each own,” explains Green. “We knew between each of our experiences and bringing on experts and guests, we could help many women feel their best.”

Green says many women lose their identity once they become mothers. HERself is one way to help women get a step ahead.

“We all know there will be shifts, but losing sight of who each of us uniquely is, that is something we want to prevent,” Green notes. “This podcast provides solidarity when you need support and guidance when you're looking to grow.”

Green and Kiefer met at UWL. Green was a community health major minoring in communications. Kiefer was an exercise and sport science major with an emphasis in fitness. About a decade later, they launched their podcast in January 2020, two months before the world shut down for the pandemic. While the pandemic changed some of their podcast routines, they got back on track with even more success.

Kiefer helped build the podcast community through her blog and Instagram account. Many followers share the HERself podcasts on social media. The result: HERself grew quickly and continues to have steady growth. In summer 2021, the program crossed the threshold of 1 million downloads.

The pair, who both live with their families in Waunakee, have growing Instagram accounts where they expand on details from their podcasts. They’ve also created a HERself Patreon community, which offers a private group for book club and exclusive episodes, along with various coaching opportunities.

In September, they launched a new podcast: Pursuing HER Purpose. That podcast aims to help women wanting to shine in their working role, as well as motherhood.

“We help women get to their next step in growing their personal brand, moving forward in their entrepreneurial journey, or taking the leap from the corporate world and into something they can call their own,” says Green.

Kiefer and her sister, Krystle Howald, also created a website service following their first pregnancies about six months apart. The sisters founded “Expecting and Empowered,” which offers an array of resources and advice for women through their pregnancy and postpartum.

Kiefer and Green plan to continue looking for creative ways to offer sound advice for busy women.

“We are very much looking forward to helping even more women find a life that helps them feel fulfilled,” says Green.

Connect with them

Alums Abby Green and Amy Kiefer have active Instagram storylines.
