Take this short quiz spanning UWL’s 114-year history

Test your knowledge by answering these 10 questions below that explore UW-La Crosse history and other facts from World War I construction delays to more recent presidential visits.

The questions were originally created for the board game, “Eagleopoly,” designed by UWL first-year students and their instructor Teri Holford. The class pieced together the game in Holford’s section of a First-Year-Seminar course during the 2022-23 school year as the class collective project.

Students brainstormed and selected the questions, keeping in mind what future first-year students might want to know. They also voted on the type and value of the game board properties that would be sold during the game. Two of UWL’s popular student support units, the Public Speaking Center and Writing Center, also participated by generating questions related to their areas for the game.

“I loved every minute of it,” says Holford about creating the game. “The process of brainstorming, ranking and voting created community in itself, and the students were proud to have been part of seeing this semester project become a board game that will live on and help other first-year students adapt to college.”

Holford came up with the idea for the game based off similar university-themed games like Madisonopoly, the UW-Madison-themed board game. Like the traditional Monopoly game, players take turns rolling the dice and following the instructions where they land. In the UWL game, players choose a role to represent whether chancellor, provost, registrar, campus housing, cashier or student senators.

Three games are available for check out at Murphy Library.

Alumni are welcome to visit Murphy Library and utilize library resources. To do so, alumni will need to set up a library account at the library’s Circulation Help Desk, which will allow them to check out physical materials as well as access databases from a library computer.
Murphy Library archivists share La Crosse history, encourage preservation before it’s too late

Why is it whenever an historic building is being torn down because of years of neglect, abandonment or natural disaster, we look on thinking, “Oh, that’s too bad. They should have saved that building!”

At the point the wrecking ball hits the walls, it’s too late to step in and preserve a historic place. The La Crosse area’s more long-term residents may fondly remember unique, historic buildings such as the old Post Office, Cargill Mansion, Michel Brewery, County Courthouse and Stoddard Hotel. Structures like these are one-of-a kind, and they make a community stand out for its history, character and beauty.

The City of La Crosse Heritage Preservation Commission is boosting awareness of local properties that are still around and serving as an important piece of the community's history. But they are all at a turning point and in danger of being demolished or suffering irreplaceable damage. By shining a spotlight on them, the goal is to work together to find solutions to make sure they stay part of the community.

She notes the project has also allowed her to mentor an undergraduate student in historical research and writing for publication.

“So far, I have been completely blown away by the community’s positive response to the articles, as I never expected so many people to approach me about them,” says Godden. “While it is too late to save La Crosse’s lost historic treasures, I hope that the community can band together to preserve the best of what still remains, as many of these buildings contain irreplaceable craftsmanship and features, and once they are demolished, they are gone forever.”

In 2023, Godden and her now-graduated UWL student archivist Evelyn Gaunt, shared the histories of seven endangered properties. These articles were published as part of a series of the “10 most endangered historic properties in La Crosse,” published in the La Crosse Tribune in May and June 2023.

“Overall, I am incredibly happy that I could capitalize on my educational and professional experiences to be a more effective commissioner and help save some of the city’s most unique culture and character,” says Godden.

UWL’s extensive steamboat photo collection grew even more over the past two years with additions from three major collections.

Added works propel the steamboat story at UW-La Crosse

Steamboat photos and memorabilia continue to flow into the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

The university’s Murphy Library Special Collections/Area Research Center holds one of the nation’s largest image collections related to historic steamboats and inland river scenes. There are roughly 40,000 images on site, nearly 30,000 of which can be viewed online. Books, periodicals, ephemera and charts complement the images that comprise the majority of the collection.

“Digitization and collection development are perpetually on-going in Special Collections,” explains David Mindel, digital collections librarian. “Naturally, collections and projects of this size don’t happen overnight.”

Mindel has overseen significant growth of the historic steamboat collection at Murphy Library recently due to several material donations received over the past two years. Those donations are in addition to the generally consistent donations of steamboat-related items regularly brought to the library.

Built on the success of Murphy Library’s previous librarians and archivists, the collection stands out as a central repository for researchers, students and the general public. Those interested can explore topics about La Crosse and the Mississippi River’s history related to commerce, transportation and recreation. Collected materials extend beyond the Midwest, reaching coast to coast.

David Mindel, digital collections librarian at UWL, looks over some of the steamboat materials recently donated to Special Collections. “With all of the recent donations, UW-La Crosse’s designation as one of the top centers for steamboat materials is solidified even more,” says Mindel.

The most recent surge in river-related materials coming into the collection came from the late Dave Thomson of California, who was a major collector of all things steamboats. His collection included not only original historic photos, but also original documents, postcards, books, puzzles, games, music and movies related to steamboats.

After Thomson died in July 2021, his brother, Darryl, contacted Murphy Library Special Collections to see if it could become the new permanent home for his brother’s collection. Archivists agreed and by November that year, boxes began arriving filled with everything from books, pins, CDs and videos, to navigation charts, LPs, photos and documents. By late the next January, 11 boxes of materials were added to the library’s steamboat collection.

These were only the tip of the iceberg. The bulk of Thomson’s collection arrived by moving truck during the summer 2022. As Mindel watched, the true scope of the collection only started to become apparent as the forklift unloaded boxes and crates containing materials valued collectively at more than $60,000.

The next year, Mindel and digitization assistant, Nikki Pegarsch, began processing the Thomson Steamboat Collection. It includes more than 500 books, thousands of photos, postcards and documents, as well as four steamboat models.

While Thomson’s collection was flowing in, Mindel continued corresponding with another steamboat enthusiast, La Crosse native Richard Egan. Egan, who was living in Oregon, had worked with Special Collections as early as 2019 to ensure his well-curated collection of steamboat photos and documents would ultimately be donated to the library.

In early 2022, as his health declined, Egan made Mindel aware of the expedited timeline for his materials to make their way to La Crosse. Egan died while that was in progress. His daughter, Kim, coordinated the shipping of his steamboat materials following his death.

That’s when the scope of the collection started to become apparent to David Mindel, digital collections librarian, as the forklift unloaded boxes and crates containing materials valued collectively at more than $60,000.

By September, three boxes of Egan’s materials arrived. Archivists soon discovered the amount of research and attention to detail provided while examining the binders of materials, which consisted of hundreds of photos and documents.

Yet, the onslaught of riverboat materials kept flowing. While coordinating the two estate donations, Mindel was approached by Carrie Johnson, executive director of the Winona County Historical Society, regarding its steamboat photo collection. The collection originally arrived at the society in 2007, the product of steamboat enthusiast Ralph DuPae’s lifelong efforts to acquire images of steamboat photos from across the country.

The historic steamboat photo collection housed in Murphy Library already had ties to DuPae with the work he began with former librarian and archivist, Edwin Hill. After 15 years and various personnel changes, Johnson recognized the mutual benefit in reuniting these linked collections.

As the UWL portion of DuPae’s work represented a much larger collection, Johnson decided that her organization would donate its materials to Murphy Library. With approval from the Winona County Historical Society board of directors, Mindel and Pegarsch showed up in Winona with a U-Haul on a cold, wet February morning. Several hours later, the roughly 10,000-image collection arrived at its new home at UWL.

With all the new materials, Mindel and Pegarsch are working on the next phase: digitizing the Thomson and Egan photographs and documents to make them available online.

The photographs from Winona will take additional time to sort, organize and identify duplicated items. Eventually, the archivists hope to add the images to the current online Historic Steamboat Collection and incorporate them among the other steamboat images previously housed in Special Collections.

“With all of the recent donations, UW-La Crosse’s designation as one of the top centers for steamboat materials is solidified even more,” says Mindel, while also noting his appreciation to the collectors and those who donated the materials on their behalf.

See online steamboat archives.

To learn more about the collection, or to consider donating river-themed items to Murphy Library Special Collections, contact Mindel at dmindel@uwlax.edu.

Art Professor Jennifer Williams is drawn back to Murphy Library each September to recollect feelings around 9-11.

“I recall one painting with profound, lasting impact depicts the horror of 9-11,” says Williams. “Painted by Kim Van Someren-Berg, I still visit it each September, reminded of how she began the work in a fury of creativity and grief as we watched those horrific events unfold in real time.”

It’s that kind of impact William sees taking place in Murphy Library thanks to a new program promoting student artwork.

The program is organized by Murphy Library faculty and staff Amber Leibundgut-Peterson and Marc Manke, both eager to promote the work of student artists and create a more vibrant, creative learning environment in the library. In spring 2021 and 2022, students in Williams’ 300/400 level painting courses drafted proposals for a large-scale work — 4-feet by 4-feet — that connects with the mission of the library and reflects current time.

The course-embedded, high-impact exercise involves weeks of planning and creating. Student artists discover how to construct the stretcher from the ground up, thanks to wood shop demonstration and mentoring by Manke. It culminates when the finished work is delivered to the library during finals week.

“I hope these new paintings will have a lasting impact with enduring messages of hope and creativity,” says Williams.

The canvas paintings are installed at the library for at least two years, after which students may take them. The students received full funding and support for canvas stretcher construction and all other materials. Special course fees can't support work of this scale, so funding from the Murphy Library Endowment gives students an opportunity to work on a large canvas without undue financial burden. They keep any leftover funding for future art projects.

Williams says what's particularly interesting about the most recent work delivered May 11, is its overall emphasis on healing and positive emotional impact during unprecedented challenging times.

“Any time a work of art mingles with the existing collection of an institution like a museum or library, history is made, and new contexts are created,” she notes. “As a professor and an artist, it gives me great hope that UWL values creative endeavors enough to support student art in this meaningful way.”

After extensive research in color psychology, I decided to implement a wide range of hues and tones that can determine subconscious emotions or behavior." Blanck says her painting “The Spread of Creativity," creates a serene atmosphere that eases anxiety and gives a peaceful place to work or read. “Plants represent new growth,” she explains, “which can be motivating for those who utilize the library to seize opportunities to grow and expand their knowledge." Blanck's second painting accepted was titled, “Library Garden."
