The Summer Assistant (SA) is an important part of our summer staff. The Office of Residence Life will host a variety of camps and conferences and will also house summer school students. The SA position is a combination of the Resident Assistant (assisting residents, building community, and enforcing policies) and the Conference Assistant (preparing the hall for a camp/conference, providing overnight duty coverage, and assisting camp/conference staff as needed) positions. Most importantly, the SA provides positive customer service to all who stay in our halls during the summer. The SA will work on a team of approximately 10 SAs. 

Qualifications expanding section

The requirements of this position are not compatible with taking classes in the summer. Therefore, preference in hiring will be given to applicants who are not taking summer classes (on-line classes taken on one’s own time are okay).  To be eligible for consideration, Summer Assistant candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Be available to work from May 13, 2019 through August 23, 2019. Fall 2019 residence hall staff will be released early for training. Schedule is subject to change due to specific camps’
  • Be an enrolled student at a UW System school
  • Be in good conduct standing at UWL
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
  • Exhibit a solid work ethic
  • Be able to work well with other people
  • Demonstrate ability to work independently of a supervisor
  • Have a general knowledge of Residence Life
  • Possess good leadership, communication, organizational, and time management skills

Preference will be given to applicants with some Residence Life job experience (DA, AHK, DC, RA, AA)

Compensation expanding section

SAs will be compensated for their work. They will be paid via direct deposit at a rate of $9.00/hour. Returning SAs receive a $0.25 increase for each summer of service (2nd summer = $9.25, 3rd summer = $9.50). SAs are also provided free summer housing in Reuter Hall. Throughout the summer, weekly hours will vary depending on the camps and conferences we will be hosting. However, an SA can typically expect to average approximately 30-40 hours per week.

The priority application deadline for the Summer Assistant position is Friday, February 15.

Interviews for the Summer Assistant position will be conducted throughout the spring semester. Applicants will be contacted via their UWL email if they are selected to participate in an interview.
