Welcome to the Residence Halls at UWL! 
We look forward to your arrival!

As a department and University community, we are proud of the move-in process that we coordinate for our residents. We have received positive feedback on our move-in week and we will continue to do our best to serve you on the day you arrive. With your help, we can continue our excellent system for getting you settled.

We know that families need to make arrangements for move-in days. Below, you will find the dates and times that you can move into your room. More information will be provided (including directions to your hall and traffic patterns) as we get closer to the fall semester in August.

It is important that all students and families (including returning students) pay close attention to the following details as they will be changed to accommodate construction and other University events. Both move-in schedules and traffic patterns have been designed to accommodate our students in the best way possible.

Move-in dates

Now that you’re packed up and ready to go, you’ll need directions for your journey! Click on these links for general directions to the hall of your choice:

When searching for UW-La Crosse, please DO NOT use the general University address, as this address does not account for our modified traffic patterns. Instead, please navigate to these intersections depending on the hall:

Angell Hall:

Main Street and 14th Street North, La Crosse, Wisconsin 54601

Coate Hall:

La Crosse Street and Oakland Street, La Crosse, Wisconsin 54601

Drake Hall:

State Street and 15th Street North, La Crosse, Wisconsin 54601

Eagle Hall (Gray & Maroon):

Once you are close to campus, representatives from UWL will guide you to your destination as you approach this intersection. Upon arriving to campus, please follow these directions:

  • Follow the traffic pattern given to you by our office
  • When parking to unload, please pay attention to the specialized instructions given to you by our move-in crew
  • The student should proceed to the front desk to get their initial paperwork, while the parents, guardians, and friends should stay with the vehicle to start unloading
  • THE DRIVER OF THE VEHICLE SHOULD NOT LEAVE as your vehicle will be unloaded by our move-in crews quickly and we’ll need to start making space for other vehicles coming to unload
  • After unloading your vehicle, move your vehicle to your designated parking spot following the instructions given to you
  • Parking in this spot will be free for the remainder of your move-in day
Setting up your bed loft

The Office of Residence Life at UWL provides bed frames and lofts in all rooms on campus at no additional cost. The side posts and rails are made of solid oak and are fully adjustable to provide our residents with flexibility to place their beds at a desired height. As a result, homemade bunking systems are not allowed to be used in our facilities. Bed parts are pre-included in all halls except Reuter, where you can get them with help from your Resident Assistant.

What to bring and what NOT to bring

What to bring? Start with what makes a place feel like home. That might be a 4 cup coffee pot, a picture of your closest friends or a favorite blanket. Then fill in those boxes with necessities. Don't forget to talk to your roommate to make sure you are not doubling up on items. The rooms are not large and good planning can help it feel spacious while still having everything you need. Our students tell us that necessities include: 

  • Small microwave (1000 watts or less)
  • Snacks
  • One or two sets of plastic-ware (plates, forks, etc.)
  • Sandals to wear in the shower and a shower tote to carry shampoo
  • Pillow
  • Extra-long twin size bedding (can be found at most stores this time of year)
  • Fused power strip (surge protector)
  • Umbrella
  • 1 set of towels
  • Hangers
  • Laundry basket and laundry supplies
  • School supplies
  • Alarm clock
  • If lofting a bed - furniture for under a loft (79" or less in length)
  • Social Security Card and Photo ID - If you are planning on getting a job on campus you will need the original to complete I-9 forms.

If you are in any hall besides Eagle or Reuter:

  • Area rug
  • Box fan
  • 3M command strips

What should you leave at home? Most students tell us they brought too much stuff! Do you need 4 towels or will 1 towel do? Can you wait and bring your winter boots and coat after your next trip home? We also provide a lot of things for student use at our front desks like irons and ironing boards, pots and pans, vacuums, games, etc. Be sure to check the Residence Life policies to know what is not allowed as this is not an exhaustive list:

  • Homemade lofts - We provide lofts for you!
  • George Foreman-type grill (allowed only in Reuter Hall)
  • Open coil appliances
  • Toaster (allowed only in Reuter Hall)
  • Hot plates
  • Hoverboards or electronic skateboards
  • Fridge (We provide one. If you bring another fridge, there is an additional energy charge that will be applied to your student bill.)
  • Wireless printer or router (It interferes with our Wi-Fi.)
  • Weapons of any kind
  • Candles with wicks
  • Incense
  • Pets - other than fish!
  • Trash can - We provide them!
  • Lamps with plastic shades, halogen lamps, or multiple light lamps
  • Non-UL approved electronics
  • Non-LED lights
  • Non-fused or multi-plug outlets
  • Humidifier, space heater, or air conditioner
  • Marker boards/white boards to affix to your door

Move Out Dates

The Spring 2017 Move Out Date is:  May 13, 2017 by 2:00 p.m.

24 Hour Policy: Residents will be asked to vacate their space within 24 hours after their last final exam. If you believe you require an exception, please contact your Hall Director.  

Other Move Outs: For move outs during other times, outside of the regularly expected time frame, please consult with your Hall Director.

Cleaning Up and Checking Out

The details of your check out procedure will be provided by the Hall Director. Generally, all students will be required to do the following before they check out of their rooms:

  • Remove ALL belongings from your room
  • Clean room to the condition it was when you moved in
  • Complete the check-out with a staff member.  EVERY resident must formally check out.

Cleaning items and other tools can be checked out at the front desk. If you have questions about the cleaning process, please check with your Hall Director.

Note: Not all areas of damage will be listed on this sheet. Uncommon damages and those not listed on this sheet will be reviewed by your Hall Director and the Assistant Director of Facilities.
