Megan Strom and Evan Nold

Megan Strom, Global Cultures & Languages and Evan Nold, School of Education student, presented "Calling out lxs culpables: Critical discourse studies as language activism " at The 50th Annual Meeting of the Linguistic Association of the Southwest on Thursday, Sept. 24 online. This presentation includes the results of a 2021 summer research project carried out by Dr. Strom and Evan Nold on the representation of Covid-19 in Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention centers in Spanish-language media.

Gerardo Aponte-Safe

Gerardo Aponte-Safe, Department of Educational Studies in the School of Education, presented "Constructing the stories of the Other: Teachers’ travel experiences and their pedagogies for global perspectives" at the National Council for the Social Studies on Nov. 30 online. His presentation present his research on a case study of the impact of a Fulbright-Hays Group Project Abroad professional development on teachers’ instructional decisions regarding narratives about cultures different than their own, examining how teachers authenticated different stories they shared with students about Costa Rica and its people.

Hanadi Shatara

Hanadi Shatara, History and School of Education, presented "How Global Educators Positioned the World: The World Views and Teaching Interconnectedness, Justice Orientations, and Cosmopolitanism" at National Council for the Social Studies Annual Conference on Monday, Nov. 30, online. Shatara's paper discussed the worldviews of global educators in NYC public schools, looking specifically at interconnectedness, justice orientations, and cosmopolitanism. She explained ways that global educators’ positionalities influenced their ways of teaching global education.
