Welcome to the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Arts Day!
By joining us on Arts Day you’ll be able to participate in a small part of the excitement, creativity and possibilities that the departments of Art, Music and Theatre Arts have to offer here at UWL. Throughout the day, you’ll be able to experience first-hand various workshops and presentations. This will provide you with valuable insight into each of these exciting majors all the while engaging with talented UWL faculty and students.

Arts Day
Event Details:
When: Friday, November 1, 2019
Who: This is a free event for high school students interested in pursuing the arts.
How: Registration is required to attend. Workshop sessions are limited to participating high school students. Parents who wish to accompany their student are encouraged to use this day to meet with Admissions and/or Financial Aid or explore the La Crosse area.
After you register: You will receive a confirmation letter in the mail. You will receive your personalized event schedule at Check-in.

Workshop Descriptions
Art Sessions:
Guerilla Art & Graffiti
Participants will explore using graffiti style techniques along with manufacturing small "Guerilla Art" objects as magnets and buttons to leave in anonymous public places as protagonists/advocates for global change and social justice.
Location: Art Education Studio, 203 Center for the Arts

Hot Color: Paint and Print
Paint with hot color, literally, on a metal palette. Express your creativity through abstract painting, then create a direct print called a monotype. This kind of monotype dries (cools) almost instantly, allowing for more paint layers or collage. Work in the studio alongside UWL painting students to make art that embodies free expression and experimentation.

Photography
Join us in the photo lab for a hands-on demonstration of camera-less photography. We will use everyday objects to compose and create photograms in the darkroom. No experience necessary.

Theatre Sessions:
Stage Make-Up
Join student actors and designers as they discover the fundamentals of painted, theatrical makeup. Using imagination and creativity, we will study physical analysis, character analysis and color theory as we gain techniques in application.
Location: Makeup Room, Center for the Arts, lower level

Musical Theatre Performance
Come experience the process actors go through while preparing for a musical. The workshop will focus on various techniques the actor//singer uses to act a song and connect with the audience.
Location: Toland Theatre, 150 Center for the Arts

Stage Combat
Observe the art of hand-to-hand stage fighting. Student actors learn a safe, non-violent approach to the techniques of multiple combat disciplines including attacks, defense, floor work, grappling and partner skills.

Music Session:
Music Department Showcase
Music faculty and students perform solos and chamber music. A Q & A session will follow the performance.

Meet the Arts Day Faculty
Joe Anderson
Joe has taught at UWL since the fall of 1991 and served as the Chair of the department since 2010. He has designed costumes and makeup for over 140 university productions. He has designed for various theatres, dance companies, television and film. Joe has been recognized for his costume and make up design excellence at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. His work has taken him as far away as Cairo, Egypt.
Jonathan Borja
Jonathan holds a Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music in flute performance, a Master of Music in musicology from the Conservatory of Music and Dance, University of Missouri-Kansas City. Dr. Borja earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Principia College. Dr. Borja studied at the National Conservatory of Music in his native Mexico City and has performed at the National Flute Association Convention, Steinway Hall, Helzberg Hall, the Kansas City Art Institute, National Conservatory, National University in Mexico and the National University of Singapore.
Kathleen Hawkes
Hawkes earned her B.F.A. in Photography and Printmaking from Cornell University and her M.F.A. in Photography from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. In 2012 Hawkes received a Fulbright grant to conduct creative research in the South Pacific. In her artistic practice Hawkes uses photography, digital imaging and drawing.
Lisa Lenarz
Lisa earned her M.F.A. in Visual Art from Vermont College of Fine Arts with emphases in Printmaking, Digital Media, and Feminist Art. Her work has been exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum as part of Ulrike Müller’s published, “Herstory Inventory: 100 Feminist Drawings by 100 Artists,” and at Galerie 5020 in Salzburg, Austria. Additionally, she taught Art for ten years in K-12 public schools and a combined six years as Adjunct Faculty in Higher Education between UWL and Viterbo University. She currently teaches Art Education courses as Assistant Professor of Art at the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse.
Mary Leonard
Mary Leonard enjoys a fruitful and full career as Head of Performance within the Department of Theatre Arts at the University of Wisconsin La Crosse. She directs 3 productions a year and teaches a wide variety of acting and musical theatre courses. She originally comes form St. Paul, Minnesota and holds a Bachelors degree in Theatre from Hamline University and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Acting from Minnesota State. Throughout her time in the La Crosse area she has directed over 62 productions. She also originated Camp Creative, a unique summer camp for children to experience art, music and drama. Recently she served as the director of Eric Ulloa’s 26 Pebbles collegiate world premier which was selected by the Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival to perform at the Region III Festival in Indianapolis.
Kathryn Moran
Praised as a “well-schooled singer with a delightfully fresh voice” (Boston Globe), the young soprano Kathryn Skemp Moran is widely recognized for her beautiful voice, compelling stage presence and sensitive musicianship. On the operatic stage, Ms. Moran has performed a variety of roles and recently appeared with the Boston Lyric Opera as Bubikopf in The Emporer of Atlantis, where she was also featured as Flora in The Turn of the Screw. She performed with Madison Opera singing Laurie in Copland’s The Tender Land, and has been featured with Glimmerglass Opera, Chicago Opera Theater, Aspen Music Festival, and the Florida Orchestra. Under the baton of Keith Lockhart, she appeared with the Boston Pops on their Holiday Tour and with Faith Prince and Alice Ripley in The Best of Sondheim, with the Utah Symphony. Kathryn earned a Bachelor of Music and Musical Theater degree from Northwestern University and a Master of Music degree from Boston University.
Greg Parmeter
Greg joined the UW-La Crosse Department of Theatre Arts in Fall 2016 and has directed Charlotte's Web, Eleemosynary, The Importance of Being Earnest, The Laramie Project, and Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike. Greg began his career as an elementary school teacher working with special needs students. He attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where he earned a Master of Fine Arts in acting. In April 2008, Greg directed the La Crosse Community Theatre’s (LCT) production of The Sound of Music. He was then hired as LCT’s artistic director where he oversaw the production of 33 shows. Greg is a certified Fight Master from the Society of American Fight Directors. He has served as the fight choreographer for several productions including Bridge to Terabithia, Macbeth, Deathtrap, and Reasons to be Pretty.

Please note that the Theatre and Art workshop sessions are limited to 15 students and is on a first-come, first-served basis. If a workshop is filled, the registration will request that you choose a different workshop.
A detailed schedule of events will be provided in your packet at check-in based on the workshops for which you registered.
Helpful Information
Parking: Participants have two options for parking on the UWL campus during Arts Day. Participants may choose to park in any commuter lot, using the pay station at the cost of $1 per hour. Partipants can also choose to go to the Parking Services office and purchase a half day ($3) or full day ($5) permit. You are encouraged to park in the parking ramp. Either option requires your car's license plate number. For more information about the location of the Parking Services office or parking ramp, please refer to the campus map below.

Parents/Teachers: Parents are more than welcome to participant in Arts Day’s welcome, department overview and Music Department Showcase. Due to limited space, the Theatre and Art workshops are for high school students only.
