Dear Friend of MVAC:

The Mississippi Valley Archaeology Center proudly engages in public outreach, education, and research that embodies the Wisconsin Idea—the University of Wisconsin’s commitment to service that extends beyond our college campuses. Our staff members are dedicated professionals who share their deep knowledge about our region's rich and fascinating past, from giving talks at local events to providing information to landowners and businesses, to answering questions from passers-by who might see us excavating in the middle of town. We connect UWL and the community by fostering strong relationships with public schools, municipalities, government agencies, local businesses, and members of the public. We especially value our relationships with avocational archaeologists and supporters, who are essential to our mission of discovery, research, education, and preservation.

Events: We recently welcomed Dr. John O’Shea, Curator of Great Lakes Archaeology at the University of Michigan Museum of Anthropology, to present “Prehistoric Archaeology at 120': Investigating 9,000 Year Old Hunting Sites beneath the Great Lakes,” and he was very well received.  On March 26, 2020, UWL Archaeology alum Dr. Gregg Jamison (Assistant Professor at UW–Milwaukee at Waukesha) will present “The UW MIA Recovery and Identification Project: Bringing Missing Service Members Home.” In fall 2020, Dr. Scott Anfinson (retired Minnesota State Archaeologist) will talk about “The Kensington Runestone and Golf Balls on the Moon.” Throughout the year MVAC will host our annual Artifact Show, Volunteer Field Survey, Public/High School Field School, and youth classes. Find details on these and other public events on MVAC’s website.
