A great place to live

Posted 12:51 p.m. Thursday, April 25, 2024

The online magazine Money placed La Crosse on its list of the 50 best places to live in the nation – the only Wisconsin city to crack the list.

La Crosse named top 50 U.S. city – and best in Wisconsin

La Crosse is being recognized as one of the best cities to live in the United States — whether you’re attending college, launching your career or putting down lifelong roots.

The online magazine Money placed La Crosse on its list of the 50 best places to live in the U.S. — the only Wisconsin city to crack the list. Money described La Crosse as “a picturesque slice of Midwest Americana with a healthy job market, thriving arts scene and some of the best freshwater fishing in the country.

Corey Sjoquist

Corey Sjoquist, assistant vice chancellor for Admissions & Recruitment, says the vibrancy of the La Crosse community is a powerful draw for students and families.

“In addition to the excellent educational experiences we offer, we know a significant reason students choose UWL is the greater La Crosse region,” Sjoquist says. “We’re fortunate to live in a place filled with so much beauty and so many opportunities. It makes it an easy decision for many students to become a UWL Eagle.”

Money went on to highlight La Crosse’s abundant outdoor recreational opportunities, its array of shops and restaurants, and its thriving arts scene.

Further distinguishing La Crosse is the strong local economy and job market.

La Crosse has several large, reputable employers, an unemployment rate around 2%, and a median home listing price well below the national average.

Approximately 150 miles from both Minneapolis and Madison, La Crosse enjoys the affordability and charm of small-town living with convenient access to large-city benefits.

This is not the first time La Crosse has been recognized as a desirable place to live. In 2022, UWL was No. 4 on Preply's list of the best small college towns in the United States.
