The center will also offer summer archaeology programs for youth.

Public Archaeology Field School

Three-day and five-day experiences are available for high-school aged students and adults June 23-27. The school is a well-rounded experience for those who want to learn about the process of archaeology. After collecting artifacts in the field, lab work may include washing and sorting ceramics, stone tools and other remains. An experimental archaeology component may explore making stone tools and using an atlatl or spear thrower. Optional lab hours and local field trips will be available after regular field school hours. No previous experience is necessary. Registration of $350 or $500 includes a one-year MVAC membership. Supervised dorm facilities are available for high school students at an additional cost of $225 for three days and $335 for five days. No refunds for cancellations. Advanced registration required.

Archaeology center offers summer youth programs June 23-26

The Mississippi Valley Archaeology Center will offer summer archaeology programs for youth grades 4-9 Monday, June 23-26. All programs happen in 312 Wimberly Hall at UW-La Crosse. Advanced registration is required by contacting UW-L Continuing Education and Extension at 608.785.6504 or registering online. “Tombs and Temples of the Americas” runs from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday, June 23. Students entering grades 4-6 will discover the Maya, Inca and Aztecs of Mesoamerica and South America. Hands-on activities will include writing hieroglyphics, making a mask and more. Registration is $80. Cancellations prior to June 6 will receive a $40 refund. No refunds after June 6. Students bring a lunch, drink snacks and water bottle. Program Number: 84-43. “Introduction to Archaeology” runs from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday, June 24. Students entering grades 5-9 will explore MVAC’s archaeology lab and work with artifacts recovered from area excavations. Students will discover how the first Native Americans in Wisconsin survived using the area’s natural resources. “Introduction to Archaeology” is a prerequisite to “Middle School Field Experience.” Registration is $80. Cancellations prior to June 6 will receive a $40 refund. No refunds after June 6. Students bring a lunch, drink, snacks and water bottle. Program Number: 84-41 “Middle School Field Experience” runs from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Wednesday–Thursday, June 25–26. Students entering grades 5-9 will work alongside professional archaeologists in the field. Activities may include shovel testing or small-scale excavations. Weather may require alternate activities. Students must have completed “Introduction to Archaeology.” Registration is $200 and includes a travel fee. Cancellations prior to June 6 must pay an $80 cancellation fee. No refunds after June 6. Students should bring a lunch, drink, snacks, water bottle, insect repellent and sun screen. Wear comfortable walking shoes and clothes that can get dirty.
