Music Department Degrees

The UW-L Music Department offers degrees within the following three major categories:

  • Music Major
  • Music Education Major
  • Music Minor

Music Major

(BA or BS in School of Arts and Communication only-open to all students within the university.) Students enrolling in this major must complete the music major core requirements and one or more areas of emphasis. In addition, students enrolling in licensure emphases must complete school of Education requirements.

Music major core requirements

24 credits, including

  • MUS 201 - Musical Cultures
  • MUS 202 - Music History II
  • MUS 235 - Music Theory I
  • MUS 236 - Music Theory II
  • MUS 237 - Ear Training and Aural Skills I
  • MUS 238 - Ear Training and Aural Skills II
  • MUS 301 - Music History III
  • MUS 302 - Music History IV
  • MUS 335 - Music Theory III
  • MUS 336 - Music Theory IV
  • MUS 337 - Ear Training and Aural Skills III
  • MUS 338 - Ear Training and Aural Skills IV
  • successful completion of concert attendance.

Music Majors can tailor their degree to reflect one of the following areas of emphasis:

Music Education Major
(BS degree in School of Education)

Music Minor

(Open to students in all schools and colleges within the university)-24 credits including:

  • MUS 201 - Musical Cultures
  • MUS 202 - Music History II
  • MUS 235 - Music Theory I
  • MUS 236 - Ear Training and Aural Skills I
  • MUS 237 - Music Theory II
  • MUS 238 - Ear Training and Aural Skills II
  • MUS 301 - Music History III
  • MUS 302 - Music History IV
  • applied music: four credits in voice or one instrument
  • electives four credits
  • four semesters participation in large ensembles.

Note: licensure is not granted for minor only.
