Comp/Analysis project #1


Option a:
Analyze the key and chords for this linked leadsheet (236 companal 1a) using roman numerals on the music. Find and label any and all nonharmonic tones also on the music. On a separate sheet of manuscript paper write an arrangement of this piece for piano. The accompaniment should be simple and complete and follow basic counterpoint/voice leading guidelines. Include dynamics, articulations and a title for your work.

Option b:
Write a melody for the chords of this linked progression (236 companal 1b). Identify and label all nonharmonic tones in your melody on the music. After you have composed the melody arrange the piece for four part SATB or in a simple keyboard style using your melody and the given chords. Don't forget to include tempo and dynamic markings. Create a title for your work.

Option a:
Write a short sarabande or gavotte movement for keyboard or instrumental quartet (string, woodwind, brass, etc.) that includes the following:



Include the roman numeral analysis of your harmonies in the final copy. Don't forget tempo, dynamic and articulation markings and a title for your work.

Option b:

1. Answer the following questions about the attached Bach Sarabande
a. What is a Sarabande?
b. What form is this piece?
c. What key is the piece in?
d. What type of cadence is in ms 8?
e. What key is tonicized in ms. 4?
f. What other keys are implied in the second half of the piece?
g. Where is the melody in mss. 9-13?
h. Find and label on the music examples of the following:


2. Create a graph of the attached Gavotteby Bach by using 1/4 in. square graph paper and colored pencils/pens. The x coordinates will be rhythms and the y coordinates will be discrete pitches. On the completed graph identify the following:
  • all appearances of the motive
  • all cadences and keys
  • tonicizations and modulations

    Option a:
    1. Write a blues tune with melody, lyrics and chords. Notate your work using Finale. You will be expected to perform the piece with a live band and improvise several choruses of the blues in class.
    or,
    2. Write a set of variations (4-6) for piano, your instrument and piano, or your instrument and an ensemble of instruments. Notate your work using Finale. Your variations should be based on a familiar piece such as Amazing Grace, etc. and should include melodic, harmonic and rhythmic variations. As always, include tempo, dynamics, articulations and a title.

    Option b:
    1. Provide a complete analysis of the theme of the second movement of the Haydn Emperor string quartet. You will include the key, chords (roman numerals and chord symbols, nonharmonic tones, and cadences. Also analyze and illustrate the phrase structure of the theme with letters.
