The above image highlights the various regions of the vertebral column of the cat. Note that there are seven cervical (neck) vertebrae (1), which is the
same number found in most mammals. The first two cervical vertebrae (C1 & C2)
are called the atlas and axis respectively.
There are 13 thoracic vertebrae (2), which in addition to their function of
axial support, bear the ribs. Next come seven lumbar vertebrae (3), followed by
three sacral vertebrae (4) that are fused into the sacrum and a variable number (21-23) caudal vertebrae (5)
