This first example shows the first barrier to wheelchair access to this pier: stairs. This is another dock that did utilize a gangplank, but unfortunately it requires stairs to get there. This picture demonstrates a dock without the required 60" x 60" turning space. Also note the lack of a 2" vertical extension lip on the docks edge, or railings, to prevent a wheelchair from falling in the water. Several flaws in this picture, including no railings or vertical extensions, the required 60" x 60" turnaround for every 10 feet of pier. Notice the large gaps in the board slats, which could make it hard to wheel smoothly. This photo shows the lack of a transition plate, making it impossible for a wheelchair bound person to go from gangplank to pier surface. |
