Provided below is a list of suggestions for disabled people visiting the North Community Library:
PROBLEM:
Outside door threshold is 1 ½ inches
(Regulation < 3/4 in.).
This could be problematic for
someone trying to wheel into the door by themselves.
SOLUTION:
Our suggestion would be to have a helper to wheel you
over the threshold if not able to perform a wheelie safely.
Second, you may call the library to have
staff come out and assist you.
PROBLEM:
Max height of bookshelves is 66 inches
(Regulation < 54 in.) and lowest height from floor is 7 ½ inches
(Regulation > 9 in).
This could make reaching for
certain books difficult for wheelchair bound persons.
SOLUTION: The staff at the North Community Library is ready and willing to help with anything you need. If you need help reaching something, call for a staff member and they will be there right away to assist you.
Also, the library does have a
reacher for personal use. If you would be interested in
using it, ask a staff member and they will provide you with one.
PROBLEM: Limited maneuverability at turns between some of the stacks (27 in. à Regulation > 48 in.). This may cause issues reaching for books at the end of the stacks.

SOLUTION:
We would suggest bringing a cup for water.
The fountain is reachable from the front
but not the sides.
The fountain is also not low enough for
someone in a wheelchair to reach it with their mouth.
Again, if you need assistance, the
library staff is always willing to help.
PROBLEM: The meeting rooms in the basement do not have elevator access, and therefore are not wheelchair accessible.
SOLUTION: Upon calling the library to reserve a meeting room, the staff will inform you that there is no elevator for wheelchair access to the basement. We suggest bringing trained helpers to assist in descending and ascending the stairs. For information on how to safely and properly negotiate stairs with helpers, please review the following PDF If trained helpers are available, the stairway is wide enough for them to assist you down the stairs. If trained personnel are not available, the library staff can help you choose an alternative location for the meeting.
PROBLEM: The curbside parking space for disabled persons is only safe for right-entry vehicles. For vehicles where entry is on the left the person would be in the street, which is not safe.
SOLUTION: For those with left-entry vehicles it may be safer to use the main downtown library, where there are wheelchair accessible spaces in the parking lot.
