A BIG HELLO!! to all Screaming Eagles Marching Band Members, rookies as well as seasoned veterans. As the director of the Screaming Eagles Marching Band, I am extremely excited about our upcoming season and look forward to working with all of you to continue the longstanding traditions of entertainment and excellence that is expected of the SEMB at UW-L. The band continues to grow and this is looks to be our biggest group in many years!!
Another tradition is to call
Band Camp “Hell Week”! You will find there are many other traditions associated with the SEMB!!
If you are an instrumentalist and need an instrument, you should contact me ASAP
so that I can be sure we have enough instruments on hand for the start of camp.
We have a fairly good supply of instruments available for use. The colorguard and pom pon squads have newer uniforms and all
equipment necessary (except shoes).
On the following pages, you should find information that will hopefully answer
any questions you have regarding the dorm check-in process as well as a
“tentative” schedule of events for “Hell Week.” If you have any questions please
feel free to email me
fisher.tamm@uwlax.edu.
If you need immediate assistance
you can call the Music Department office at 608.785.8409 or my cell phone
608.792.4170. Thanks again for your interest
in the Screaming Eagles Marching band – I look forward to meeting and working with you.
WHEN TO MOVE IN??
Sunday August 24th
between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm. Staff
members will be on hand to pass out keys and help you move your stuff in. If you are
staying in your dorm room during Band Camp, this is when you must move in. You will be
staying in your actual room, not a “holding dorm”. If you are not sure of your assigned
room, please call the Office of Residence Life (608) 785-8075.
Once you are checked into your room, be sure to pick up your Student ID at Cartwright.
This will enable you to pick up your books early (before the rest of the freshmen
get here!) WHERE TO EAT?? If you have purchased a university meal plan for the first semester, you have
the option to buy extra days out front to cover Band Camp. We
will be located in the Whitney Center concourse at approximately 5:45 pm on
Sunday evening and at 11:15 am on Monday, August 27th, to
register students that are interested in signing up for meals. After lunch
on the 27th,
students will need to come to 221 Cartwright Center to sign-up for or adjust
their meal plan. All plans will be billed to the students’ individual
university accounts. We cannot accept checks or cash, so the students do
not need to worry about paying us when they sign-up. The cost per meal will be
$7.00. Students will be able to choose one of the following 3 options:
Ø
Lunch & Dinner (11
meals) $ 77.00
Ø
Lunch only (5
meals) $ 35.00
Ø
Dinner only (6
meals) $ 42.00 When students sign up for a
meal plan, they will receive a pre-season meal card. They will need to present
this card to the cashier each time they eat. They should return the card to the
cashier when they eat their last meal. Pre-season meals will be served in the
Food Court dining room at Whitney Center. The serving times are:
Lunch 11:30 am – 12:30 pm
Dinner 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm It is also customary for many of the sections
to go out for a “bonding” meal or two at one of the local restaurants, so you may want to
bring along a few extra bucks to join in. WHAT TO WEAR?? First and foremost – COMFORTABLE SHOES!! (You are not permitted
to march in bare feet).
You will be on your feet quite a bit so be prepared!! Other basic essentials
might include sunscreen, comfortable (light-weight, work out type) clothing, sunglasses,
and a hat. It would also be a good idea to bring a water bottle or cooler of sorts. We
will also have costume or theme days (i.e. Stop Light Day, Clash Day,
Superhero day,
etc…) so you may want to plan your wardrobe appropriately. (In case you were wondering,
people really do participate in the theme days!!) WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU NEED?? The following school owned instruments are available:
piccolo, tenor sax, mellophone, marching baritone, sousaphone, and percussion. If you are
in need of a school horn or locker, please report to room 56 in the Center for the Arts
Building (CFA) between 5:00 – 6:30 pm Sunday evening. If you are in need of an
instrument not listed, please call or email Dr. Fisher so that we can make the
appropriate arrangements for you.
Black marching shoes. We will have “Plusone” marching band footwear
available for sizing and purchase during band camp. If you need to purchase
a pair of shoes, they are $29.00. The shoes can be viewed at this
website:

Hell Week is not as bad as it sounds. It’s really band camp in disguise!! You will be busy and
get a lot of exercise. It’s a great time to reunite with old friends as well as make
many new friends. It will be a great experience so dig out your instrument and a
positive attitude – we’ll take care of the rest!! Start practicing now to build up your

clothes if you are spoken for. This is a great way to "scope" out
the field and protect your nose from sunburn!!

The less you match, the better you are! Accessorize your mixed ensemble with your
sparkliest or most outrageous jewelry.
WEDNESDAY
Sports Team Day - wear the
colors and clothes of your favorite sports team. If you don't have one
either make one up or wear UW-L colors!!
THURSDAY
Section Theme Day -
through the course of the week, each section will decide upon a common theme
for which they will dress up as. (the beach is always an option!!!)
FRIDAY
Ma'am and Sir Day/Super Hero Day - All freshmen and first year rookies shall address all
upper classmen with an appropriate title. If a freshman doesn't address an upper classmen
appropriately a "TIME OUT" (in many forms) can be given. Don't forget your favorite
super hero attire so we know what your "special" powers are!!
