Accountancy Internship Information

Initiating the Accountancy Internship for Credit Process

  • Handshake log in, "Career Center" tab, "Experiences", "Submit an Experience". Complete the survey (there is not a save option, so have all necessary information ready).
  • The "Approvers/Site Supervisor" is the person at your internship site that will be supervising you. If you are unsure who that will be, enter the HR person you’ve been contacting. You can send Career Services updated information once you start your internship. You will also re-enter this information a little further down.
  • Be sure to give a detailed job description, especially showing how your position is related to your major. You may use the description posted by the organization.
  • Career Services will then initiate the approval process with your site supervisor and the Accountancy department. After receiving all the appropriate approvals, Career Services will register you for the internship course/credits and will send you a confirmation email.
  • Students are not able to register themselves for an internship through their WINGS account.

Accountancy Internship Requirements

  • IMPORTANT: You MUST register for ACC 450 prior to the start of your internship by way of connecting with Career Services, see above!
  • Internship Orientation Session
    • Students are required to attend one session. Internship orientation sessions are offered by the Career Services office. Students should contact Career Services for a list of current offerings. Each session is ~30 minutes.
  • Hours & Credits
    • The maximum number of ACC 450: Accountancy Internship credits that can be earned in a single semester (summer, fall, or spring) is 12 credits.
    • Must work at least 40 hours for each credit you request. You may work more, but 40 hours per credit is the minimum. Credits are dependent on the accountancy faculty internship advisor’s approval of the content of your experience.
    • Working more hours doesn't necessarily equate to earning more credits. The content and relevance of your experience are equally as important as hours worked.
    • For reference, a three-credit internship during the fall/spring semesters requires at least 120 hours, which is an average of 9-10 hours of work per week during the semester.
    • Maximum number of internship credits that can be earned total (all semesters) is 15.
  • Work Progress Reports
    • Will need to submit two Work Progress Reports (WPRs). These reports will be sent to your faculty internship advisor and the Career Services advisor for your major. Your faculty internship advisor will use these in determining your grade.
  • Site Supervisor Evaluation
    • Your site supervisor will be sent mid-term and final evaluation forms to complete regarding your performance (only a final evaluation for winter and summer terms).
    • These evaluations will be sent to your faculty internship advisor for grading purposes.
  • Additional Papers/Projects
    • Talk with your faculty internship advisor about any additional papers/projects/journals that they may require as part of your internship.

IMPORTANT: Internships must be reported to Career Services via Handshake prior to the start of the semester in which students will complete the internship to arrange for earning credit. Internship credits cannot be earned or applied retroactively.
