Field experience
The DPI requires that all teacher candidates complete practical clinical experiences. Courses and field experiences are designed to address the 10 Wisconsin Teacher Education Standards.
Field Expectations
Teacher candidates complete two pre-student teaching experiences for each certification area prior to student teaching. Teacher candidates experience instructional settings specific to their respective certification requirements. A culminating student teaching experience is a full semester experience that follows the school district calendar. Each field experience is evaluated to document a teacher candidates' proficiency in meeting standards.
Field Experience I
The primary goal of Field Experience I is to assist candidates in the transfer of theoretical and research knowledge of teaching and learning to performance skills of teaching in a school setting. Candidates will create and implement lesson plans for a range of instruction group sizes that stem from methodology courses taken concurrently with the experience. The major focus of this experience is to develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions required when working with students and educational professionals in an educational setting.
Field Experience II
The primary goal of Field Experience II will build and extend the knowledge, skills, and dispositions of candidates attained in Field Experience I. This experience will assist candidates in further transferring theoretical and research knowledge of teaching and learning to performance skills of teaching in a school setting. Candidates will create and implement lesson and unit plans for a range of instructional group sizes that stem from methodology courses taken concurrently with the experience. The major focus of this experience is to automate the knowledge, skills, and dispositions required when working with students and educational professionals in an educational setting.
Special Education Field Experience
The primary goal of the special education Field Experience is to build and extend the knowledge, skills, and dispositions of candidates earning cross-categorical special education certification. This experience will assist candidates in further transferring theoretical and research knowledge of teaching and learning to performance skills of teaching in a school special education setting. Candidates create and implement lesson and unit plans for a range of instructional group sizes that stem from certification courses. The major focus of this experience is to develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions required when working with students and educational professionals in an educational setting.
Student Teaching Experience
The student teaching experience provides an opportunity to practice the knowledge, skills, and dispositions of a professional educator. The adjoining seminar further develops candidates' critical thinking regarding issues of the field and practice of educating school-age individuals. As a result of student teaching, candidates will discuss current issues experienced within their student teaching experiences as well as issues around the areas of professionalism, conflict resolution, and classroom management.
