Wendy Allen: Wendy, recipient of an undergraduate research grant, is traveling around the world. During January she was in Vietnam, reporting on her experience through her website, 'Round the World with Wendy. Visit the site and sign her guestbook! Here's some recent news from Wendy: Some look at me funny when I say this, but I'm currently living in La Crosse by choice. I love it here, so I feel fortunate to have found an internship with Organic Valley in La Farge, WI. I'm working in PR and really enjoying it, and I'm hoping to find a permanent position within the company as soon as I can. The commute is tough (an hour each way), but that's what carpools are for. With no classes, homework, English Club/ANY meetings, or workshop planning, I have no idea what to do with this strange phenomenon they tell me is called "free time." |
| Carrie Amann: Former student Carrie Amann has been promoted to Public Relations Manager for CenturyLink (formerly CenturyTel). Carrie began with CenturyTel as a Public Relations Intern in 2003 and was offered a job as a Public Relations Coordinator after receiving her degree in 2004. Carrie also works as a freelance writer in her spare time, writing for the local magazine Coulee Region Women. Her biggest accomplishment since graduating from UWL in 2004: editing the novel, The Battle Within by Travis Klingaman (another UWL alum). |

Mike Augustyn: Mike may have been the first English major to graduate from UW-L with a rhetoric/writing concentration. He files the following report from the real world: "I never thought I'd see the day where I was actually gainfully employed and independent. But just four months after graduation--four months of job searches, applications and interviews--I landed a position at Philips Radiation Oncology Systems as a Technical Writer. In short, I write documentation and release notes for equipment and software that is used to treat people with cancer. Now, I know this probably sounds forced, but I really do owe a lot of my success to the Rhetoric and Writing program at UW-La Crosse. By focusing on my writing mechanics, I was able to hone my grammar and editing skills, two very important elements to any Technical Writer (or any writer in general). Granted, I had other experience that also led me to where I ended up, but the Writing program definitely helped me focus my prior experience, skills and interests towards one common goal--becoming a good writer." |

Courtney Barry: Courtney, a recent graduate, worked with Professor David Wood to submit a paper, "Synthesizing Gender in Shakespeare's Henry V," for publication. She delivered the paper at the 20th National Undergraduate Research Conference (NCUR) at the University of North Carolina-Asheville this April. |
Jared Kuruzovich: a 2004 grad, is now living and teaching in South Korea. Both Marc and Jared won the "Achievement of Excellence" award in the English Department. Both earned their ESL certificates after graduating from UW-L. |

David Mantey: David files this report from Madison: I am an English Major/Professional Writing Minor from UW-L. As I watched my peers fall into county work and selling cars for a living, I refused to not only admit a wasted four years, but give up on what I enjoy doing so much, writing. I moved down to Madison and work both as an Assistant Editor for Ground Support Worldwide and as a Sports Writer for the Stoughton Courier Hub, the Oregon Observer, Verona Press and Fitchburg Star. I picked up the sports writing gig quickly out of school, but wasn't as fortunate in the day job. Stuck behind the counter as the manager of a check cashing store, I had to break away and Cygnus Business Media allowed me that opportunity. |

Jaime Nelson: In 2009, Jaime finishes up her degree at UW-L. She presented her undergraduate research project on the art of revision at the campus celebration as well as NCUR. She was a member of English Club all four years, including being vice president and Speak! host the last semester. Now she's off to NYU's Summer Publishing Institute for summer 2009. |
Erin Vollmer: Update from the Big Apple: "The months immediately following my May 2007 graduation from UW-L were turbulent indeed. Beginning in June 2007, I started an intensive summer program in magazine and book publishing at NYU—logically called the Summer Publishing Institute, but affectionately known as SPI. Uprooted from my small, rural Wisconsin town, I was dropped into an urban jungle chock-full of unfamiliar sights, sounds, and smells (you don’t want to know). Six weeks later (NYC time equivalent to three years), I left the NYU program with knowledge of all facets of publishing, an extensive list of publishing contacts, an apartment half the size of anywhere I lived in WI (but triple the price), a new-found love for Starbucks Grande NF Ice-Vanilla Lattes, and, most importantly, a JOB—with Penguin Books, working in editorial for the G.P. Putnam’s Sons imprint in adult books. Yes, I read for a living! So don’t fret current English majors; there is light at the end of the tunnel. I am more than happy to network if you have aspirations of breaking into book or magazine publishing. I can be contacted at elizv15@yahoo.com or, my favorite, Facebook. Happy reading!" |
