Antler – Scored

Scored antler This antler was recovered during the 1980s excavations at the Pammel Creek site located south of La Crosse, Wisconsin. The antler has been scored and grooved, preparing a sliver of antler to be removed.  The pieces of antler served as raw material from which many other objects could be made.  Many ornaments are made by trimming and polishing such strips of antler.  Pictured is the scored antler in situ (left) and a close-up of the scored antler (lower right).
