Historic Artifacts – Logging Camp

Historic Artifacts These metal artifacts were collected from two surface scatters at a site on a shallow bay in north-central Wisconsin in 1998. They include a socketed wedge (top left), a large bracket from a cant hook or peavey (a logging tool used to hook or separate logs) (top right), a square spike (center) measuring 7.5 inches (19 cm) long, and an unidentified machine part with a bell-shaped end attached to a large bolt (bottom). The wedge and bracket came from a surface scatter on a mud bar. The spike and machine part were found in a second scatter on a low knoll north of the bar. These and other historic artifacts from the site indicate it served as a logging camp between about 1885 and 1915.
