Jewelry Box

Jewelry Box This porcelain artifact was recovered during the excavation of a historic brick-lined feature dating to around the 1870s to the early 1900s in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, in 2009. It is likely the base of a jewelry box. It is white with some gilding and remnants of red paint, and the exterior has a relief design including bows, ribbons, and fruit. Although broken, curves on the rim of the box and eight “feet” on the base are visible. The base measures just under 3 inches long and 1 ¾ inches wide. Fragments of this base match pieces collected during previous excavations at the location in 2002.
