Chunkey Stone

Chunkey stone The chunkey stone is the only specifically recognized game piece that has been recovered from archaeological sites in the La Crosse area.  The game, which used polished stone disks called chunkey stones, was still being played when the first European travelers arrived in the Midwest.  A disk is rolled along the ground, and players throw spearlike sticks where the stone will finally stop.  There was intense competition.  (Chunkey stone of basaltic material, Oneota, La Crosse County)
