Midway Village – 1988 Excavations

Excavation During the summer of 1988, MVAC mounted an intensive salvage excavation project at the Midway Village, located north of La Crosse, Wisconsin.  With the cooperation of the landowner and the sand/gravel mining company it was possible to plan an entire field season at the site in advance of a proposed expansion to the sand/gravel pit.  The expansion would impact an important Oneota village site.  Due to advance planning, the project was able to involve the public. Throughout the summer, nearly 100 regional and EarthWatch (a worldwide program engaging people in scientific field research) volunteers participated in the excavation.  The area has since been quarried.
