Medary Site – Projectile Points

Projectile Points

These points were found on the ground surface about 40 years ago on a high terrace setting overlooking the La Crosse River floodplain in La Crosse County, Wisconsin. One is a side-notched point with a concave base. The original report suggested that it could be a Woodland type; however, re-examination found that the blade edges are somewhat beveled from resharpening and the concave base is ground. These attributes are more characteristic of Early-Middle Archaic projectile points (ca 5,000-7,000 BP). The second point, also made of chert, is a crudely made triangular point that could be either Late Woodland (1200-900 BP) or Oneota (350-700 BP) in age.
