Sand Lake Archaeological District – Mississippian Sherds

Oneota pottery An assemblage of Mississippian ceramics (A.D. 1100-1200) excavated in 2008 from the Sand Lake Archaeological District, La Crosse County, Wisconsin.

Top row: Examples of semi-rolled rims.

Middle row: Probable Ramey Incised body sherd that is blackened with a burnished exterior surface and a fragment of an incised trail.

Bottom left: A relatively large body sherd that has a distinctive red slip on the exterior. This shell-tempered sherd appears to be an example of the proto-Mississippian type Monks Mound Red.

Bottom right: Burnished shell-tempered body sherd.
