Many students enjoy the benefits of working part-time while going to school. Working part-time is a great way to assist with paying for the cost to attend college. Part-time work also helps most students improve their time management and organizational skills while they are gaining valuable work experience.

It must be noted that it is important for students to maintain a balance between the at-work hours and the number of credits taken in a given semester.

Part-Time Work - Students

Many on-campus and off-campus employers hire student help. The Student Employment Brochure provides information about some of those employers that typically hire a larger number of students.

Handshake provides information on part-time job opportunities and acts as a central clearinghouse for student employment both on- and off-campus.

The Federal Work-Study (FWS) program provides part-time jobs for undergraduate students with significant financial need, allowing them to earn money to assist with their educational expenses. A student must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to determine eligibility for the FWS program. If the student qualifies for the program, a Federal Work-Study allocation will be part of their financial aid offer.

Many on-campus positions are filled by Federal Work-Study students. Off-campus Community Service Work-Study opportunities are also available. These opportunities must be certified as public service and/or private non-profit organizations working for the greater good of the community. Students must meet specific financial aid requirements in order to qualify.
    
Positions, both on- and off-campus, are limited to 20 hours per week and are paid at least the current federal minimum wage.

All UWL students enrolled for official university credit toward a degree or certification program are eligible to apply for on-campus student help positions. Many of these are posted on Handshake. 

Students can add their name and contact information to lists for child care/tutoring, lawn and snow removal, or odd jobs. Prospective employers will then use the list to contact students when work is available.

Students: if you are looking for child care/tutoring jobs, we strongly recommend you use Handshake.

Job fairs are held twice a year to help students find employment. The fall job fair focuses on helping students find employment during the school year. The spring job fair focuses on summer employment.

The events are sponsored by the Academic Advising Center & Career Services and the Financial Aid Office.

International students may be eligible for part-time employment while they are enrolled. To determine eligibility, contact the UW-La Crosse Human Resources Office located in 144 Graff Main Hall.

The Student Employment Office (SEO) is committed to posting positions of interest to UWL students. The UWL SEO resources are provided free of charge to employers and student job seekers. All hiring and compensation for work performed by student employees is handled directly between the student and the employer. Watch for these types of employment/internet scams:
 
* Money Transfers. Be wary of any individual or business who asks you to cash checks and then purchase money orders and send to another location. The job may be disguised as a childcare position (or other "normal" posting) initially. Once you contact the employer, they may then ask you to accept some financial correspondence until they arrive in town for you to do the original job. 

Work-At-Home. If an opportunity sounds too good to be true, be cautious. 

* Business Opportunity Fraud. "Make thousands!" "Great Opportunity!" Again, if these positions were so great wouldn't everyone be doing it? Many of these positions may ask you to purchase items to re-sell. Read the fine print. Are you able to return the merchandise for a full refund if you don't sell it? Can you get your initial investment back if you decide to not continue with the "opportunity?" Are they asking a parent or "adult" to co-sign with you?

Additional Resources/Ideas

  • Grocery stores, hardware stores, and pharmacy stores are hiring temporary staff to help with stocking and curbside delivery, and also to fill in for regular employees who have to stay home to care for family members or are ill themselves - students should check with their local stores.
  • Grocery delivery services (Grabbit, Instacart, and even local grocery stores)
  • Third-party food delivery services (UberEats, Door Dash, Grubhub, Grabbit, etc.)
  • Medical scribe companies, such as ScribeAmerica.
  • Tutoring opportunities - since schools are closed, many families seek tutors. Some postings may be found on the UWL Financial Aid - Odd Job List. Also, check with neighbors, advertise on personal social media, or join your neighborhood on the Nextdoor app to search for opportunities.
  • Some chain restaurants are hiring people to package orders, deliver orders, and to fill in for people who have to take leave.
  • Some local restaurants may be doing the same, if they're able to support additional staff.
  • Check out this list of employers that offer tuition reimbursement opportunities as part of employment.
