Celebrate Week Without Driving

Step Up to the Challenge: Go Car-Free for the Week of Sep 28th to Oct 6th

Plan your daily life without four wheels September 28th to October 6th. Week Without Driving was created by the non-profit called America Walks, and is now being celebrated community wide in the La Crosse region for the 2nd year in a row. Week Without Driving is a national event that highlights the challenges faced by non-drivers and explores the benefits of ensuring we all have access to great walking, biking, rolling, and public transportation. UWL faculty, staff and students are invited to go car free for the week of September 28th to October 6th

This week’s celebration balances promoting the options that do exist, and encouraging their use for their environmental, health, and financial benefits, but also highlight how difficult it can be for someone without a vehicle to complete daily essential tasks, in a nation that has large been designed around the personal automobile.

If you take on the challenge, you may find that you cannot complete some daily tasks, or that they’re incredibly hard or take far longer. That finding is as important as figuring out that you can complete a week without driving. Over 40% of La Crosse residents are non-drivers, for a multitude of reasons, and we know that many of them do complete the tasks that they need, but within a system that is not necessarily easy, pleasant or equitable.

Look here for a list of events being celebrated for Week Without Driving:
