UWL Choral Union

Spring Concert

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse’s Choral Union invites the community to a moving evening of music at its spring concert, held at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 25, at English Lutheran Church, 1509 King Street, La Crosse. Advance reservations can be made here.

This year’s program features a compelling and unconventional setting of the mass, with each movement composed by a different modern composer, culminating in a rich, multi-faceted musical experience. The centerpiece of the evening is The Credo by Margaret Bonds, a groundbreaking African American composer celebrated for fusing classical music with African American spiritual and cultural traditions. This performance is part of UWL's ongoing initiative to highlight the work of women composers.

The full program includes Kyrie – René Clausen, Gloria – Rollo Dilworth, Credo – Margaret Bonds, Sanctus – Jan Sandström, Benedictus – Jocelyn Hagen, Agnus Dei – Samuel Barber’s choral transcription of Dvorák’s Adagio for Strings

Led by Dr. Christopher M. Hathaway, the Choral Union brings together singers from both the UW-La Crosse campus and the surrounding community. This intergenerational ensemble is known for its high-level musicianship and moving performances of major choral works. The April 25 performance promises a night of beauty, reflection, and shared humanity through song.

“This semester, I have pieced together movements of the mass with works from different composers,” says Dr. Hathaway. “My first thought was that this would be a great opportunity to perform The Credo. It is an extended piece with seven movements, and it holds a powerful message.”

Founded in the early 1970s, the Choral Union has a long-standing legacy of excellence, community engagement, and international collaboration. From Carnegie Hall to cathedrals in Europe, the ensemble has brought major choral works to life on stages near and far. Today, it continues to be a vibrant part of the La Crosse arts community, inspiring both its singers and its audiences.

Donation are requested for the event. Recommended donations are $20 for adults, $18 for seniors and free for students.
