CATL Specialist, Community and Belonging

The Provost’s Office is soliciting applications for the CATL Specialist, Community and Belonging position within the Center for Advancing Teaching and Learning (CATL). The mission of CATL is to support improvement of teaching and student learning at UWL. The Center provides opportunities for instructors to improve their practice through workshops, conferences, colloquia, informal discussions, grant projects, and individual consultation.   

To apply: Please provide a one-page letter indicating your interest and applicable experience along with a current, 2-page CV by noon on December 5, 2025 to CATL.  A small committee will interview candidates and make a decision as quickly as possible to assist in fall course scheduling.   

It is expected that candidates will discuss their interest in a position with their supervisor/department chair. Questions regarding the position can be directed to Kristin Koepke, Director of CATL.

POSITION DESCRIPTION  --- CATL Specialist, Community and Belonging 

The Community and Belonging Specialist helps instructors improve their practice so that it is increasingly informed by universal design for learning and high impact practices.  The Specialist will collaborate to create, shape, and start initiatives related to community and belonging as related to teaching. 

Main duties and responsibilities of the CATL Specialist, Community and Belonging:  

Provide leadership on teaching and learning topics related to  

  • Community and belonging for learning gains  
  • Organize and offer the Inclusive Teaching Institute (ITI) in collaboration with CATL staff and ITI facilitators 
  • Conduct and contribute to workshops, trainings, Communities of Practice, etc. related to community and belonging 
  • Serve as a liaison to the Division of Access, Belonging, and Compliance for classroom-based and other academic achievement initiatives  
  • Serve as a consultant to individual instructors, committees, departments, programs, initiatives, and divisions within and beyond Academic Affairs 
  • Update and develop resources and content related to community and belonging teaching practices  
  • Stay up to date on literature related to universal design for learning and high impact practices for community and belonging 
  • Collaborate with CATL staff on various CATL initiatives 

Qualifications:  

Required  

  • Full-time Tenured Faculty or Instructional Academic Staff member at UWL 
  • Familiarity with research and practice on diversity issues in teaching and learning 
  • Experience collaborating on campus efforts to advance community and belonging goals 
  • Past participation in inclusive teaching related workshops and/or conferences 
  • Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills 

Preferred  

  • Service as a member of a departmental, college, or university level committee associated with community, belonging, and/or with a focus on reducing achievement gaps  
  • Publication or presentations related to inclusive teaching 
  • Experience creating and conducting higher education instructor workshops 
  • Experience collaborating on campus efforts to advance community and belonging goals 
  • Experience working with instructors from a variety of disciplines and with varying levels of experience 
  • Knowledge of evidence-based teaching and learning practices and/or the scholarship of teaching and learning 

The positions will start August 24, 2026. The position will be filled as a .5 position* which is a 6-contact hour/semester teaching reassignment or overload with a time commitment of approximately 12-18 hours/week over a 15-week semester. This role includes summer duties paid at the rate of 1/9 of the faculty salary for the summer obligations. This is a 3-year renewable appointment.
