Evening at UWL features Reed Grimm, honors Bob and Janet Roth
“A Whole Lot of Fun” is not only the theme, it’s what is planned for the 2018 UW-La Crosse Department of Music Scholarship Gala. It’s set for 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, in Annett Recital Hall in the Center for the Arts, 333 N. 16th St.
The Gala recital, now in its fourth year, has featured both UWL alumni and artists connected to campus as the featured musicians. This year’s performers include alumnus Reed Grimm who will start the evening’s performance with a set of fun songs including “Don’t Worry Be Happy.” Along with stories shared about Bob and Janet Roth by David Reedy, the Isthmus Brass Quintet will perform a varied program including a tango and an arrangement of “The Green Hornet.”
The quintet includes Mike Forbes, a talented composer who arranged several of the evening’s compositions. Forbes also teaches trombone, euphonium and tuba at UWL. Several UWL students will join the Isthmus Brass Quintet for the final piece of the evening.
The “Whole Lot of Fun” theme was inspired by this year’s honorees, Bob and Janet Roth. Serendipity brought them both to the orchestra on campus in the early 1980s. It was there that the Roths met and continued to play in the UWL Orchestra for more than 30 years.
Their devotion to the Music Department does not stop there — for over 15 years the Roths have also supported music scholarships. The department is grateful for their support and for inspiring attendees at the Gala to raise even more funds for student performance scholarships.
Due to a large donation by UWL Professor Emeritus Anna Beth “AB” Culver, all ticket donations, $50 per seat is suggested, will be 100 percent tax deductible. There is a complete match for all funds raised by this event.
