The U.S. Army has notified UW-L it plans to phase out the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) program on campus.
In a letter to UW-L Thomas R. Lamont, Assistant Secretary of the Army, says "The Army arrived at this difficult decision after careful consideration of how best to accomplish its mission with a reduction of resources." The effective date of closure will be the end of the 2014-15 academic year.
"For over 40 years the ROTC Eagle Battalion has been an important and visible presence on our campus," says Chancellor Joe Gow. "Many UW-L students have benefitted enormously from the generous scholarships and extraordinary leadership training opportunities the program provides."
Gow says the campus can be proud UW-L has hosted a program that includes students from neighboring Viterbo, St. Mary's and Winona State universities. Gow says Rep. Ron Kind and Senators Tammy Baldwin and Ron Johnson will be contacted to see if there are any options to avoid the closure.
"In the meantime, please join me in thanking Battalion Commander LTC James Hill and all the faculty, staff and Cadets of Eagle Battalion for the tremendous honor their program has brought to our university," says Gow. "UW-L can be very proud its rich ROTC tradition."
