Courtyard memorial reflects former professor’s love of the outdoors

UW-L faculty spearheaded a campaign to raise $75,000 to sponsor and name the courtyard outside Centennial Hall Daniel R. Sutherland Memorial Courtyard. The goal was met with help from current and former faculty and staff; students; employees at U.S Geological Survey and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; and others.

Centennial Hall artwork. Deadline to RSVP for All-Campus Picnic is Aug. 24

The formal dedication of UW-L's new academic building, Centennial Hall, along with the Chancellor's All-Campus Address and picnic are set for Wednesday, Aug. 31, in Lindner Forest (north of Wing Technology Center). The address begins at 10:30 a.m. The dedication and recognition begin at 11:30 a.m. The building is open for self-guided tours until 3 p.m. A picnic will follow the ceremony. Faculty and staff who want to participate in the picnic, need to RSVP by Wednesday, Aug. 24, online here. Print the last page and bring it as your meal ticket for the picnic. Save the date! ATP performance is Sept. 4

UW-L's Awareness through Performance troupe has created a fall 2011 edition of Awareness through Performance: Generation Hope. Performances as part of UW-L’s Welcome Week activities are from 4:30- 6 p.m. and 6:30-8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 4, in Graff Main Hall Auditorium. Shows are free and open to the public. ATP strives to: • Increase social awareness of biases, prejudices and cultural differences; • Enhance social responsibility for challenging the "isms" that support ignorance, inequity, intolerance and hate; • Increase acceptance for difficult dialogue that aid in deeper understanding; • Empower community members to take a stance against unhealthy behaviors, divisive attitudes and unjust situations. An encore performance is planned for 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 7.  Faculty are encouraged to integrate ATP performances into their syllabi. Click here for more information about ATP.  

Next session to learn to create official UW-L Facebook pages set for Aug. 23

Web & Interactive Communications (iComm) is offering a workshop for faculty and staff who want to create official UW-La Crosse Facebook pages. The sessions will cover how to start and maintain a university recognized Facebook page. This week's workshop is set from 2-3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, in 15 Wing Technology Center. Nuclear Medicine Technology students receive top honors at national meeting

UW-L Nuclear Medicine Technology students took top honors at the Society of Nuclear Medicine’s annual meeting June 4-8 in San Antonio. Award-winning students and their research projects include:
  • Stacy Kadrich won the top award in the student research general nuclear medicine category and placed second in the overall student research category for her presentation of the research project “Parathyroid SPECT Imaging: Is it Advantageous to the Patients?”
  • Katherine Martin placed third in the overall student research category for her presentation of the research project “Stability Devaluation for [18F] FDG at High Radioactive Concentrations.”
  • Lauren Ernest won the top award in the student research PET category for her presentation of the research project ”Whole Body PET Scans for Head and Neck Cancers.”
  • Katie Frank won the top award in the student research cardiology category for her presentation of the research project “Regadenoson Versus Adenosine: A Patient’s Perspective.”
  • Brad Brunner, Frank, Chris Jacobs and Martin were awarded SNMTS travel grants to attend and present at the meeting.
  Susan Kelly, Mathematics, and alumna Sarah Rozner, had their paper "Winifred Edgerton Merrill: 'She Opened the Door'" accepted for publication in the Notices of the American Mathematical Society,  the world's most widely read professional mathematics magazine. Rozner worked on the paper as a UW-L undergraduate research project.
Tom Kernozek, Health Professions, published "Quadricep and Hamstring Activation During Drop Jumps With Changes in Drop Height" in the August Physical Therapy in Sport issue (Peng HT, Kernozek TW, Song CY.  Phys Ther Sport. 2011 Aug;12(3):127-32).
Garth Tymeson, Exercise and Sport Science presented "Physical Education for Students on the Autism Spectrum" at the 2011 National Autism Conference at Penn State University Aug. 3. Tymeson, Manny Felix, Rick Mikat and Matt Shutt, all Exercise and Sport Science, presented "A Comparison of Physical Education Content Priorities of Teachers and Parents of Children With Down Syndrome" at the annual conference of the National Consortium on Physical Education and Recreation for Individuals with Disabilities in Reston, Va.,  July 14.
