The UWL Jazz Studies Program presents the final big band concert of the 2015-16 season at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 21, in Valhalla, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition. The concert, part of Jazz Appreciation Month, is free and open to all.
The UWL Jazz Orchestra will perform six contemporary jazz and Latin jazz selections. Anton Lenertz will be the featured alto saxophone soloist on “The Next Chapter,” a contemporary selection by Wisconsin composer Patty Darling. “Time Check,” an up-tempo, swing tune made famous by the Buddy Rich Big Band, will feature Sean Conway on tenor sax, Kyle Renfro on guitar and Brett Hulmer on drums. Conway and Renfro will also be featured on “Glib,” a funky selection by composer Chuck Owen.
Owen was a guest lecturer with the band earlier this month and the students had the opportunity to be rehearsed and critiqued on his composition. A highlight of the band’s set will be “Uno Mas” by Paul Lopez. This chart is written in the traditional Latin Salsa style and will feature an authentic Latin rhythm section in the style of Tito Puente.
The UWL Jazz Ensemble will open the concert with selections ranging from Thad Jones’ “Big Dipper” to Wayne Shorter’s “Children of The Night.” The band will feature several soloists including Matthew Robinson on trumpet, Cara Jones, Eric Adams on drums.
The UWL Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble are under the direction of Karyn Quinn.
