Professor Emeritus Allen Birchler
Professor Emeritus Allen Birchler died Tuesday, Aug. 14, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center. Birchler was a faculty member in UW-L's History Department from 1965-90. In 1990, Birchler and his wife, Margaret, along with Tony Tanke, '72, a former student of Birchler, established the The Allen. B. Birchler Lecture Fund. They wanted to encourage excellence in the study and promotion of the humanities through a lecture series or panel discussions at UW-L that explore historical, literary and philosphical topics tied to a historical perspective. Services for Birchler will be held Saturday, Aug. 25, at First Presbyterian Church, 233 West Ave. South. For a full obituary and more, see the Sunday, Aug. 19, La Crosse Tribune.
