'The Pervert's Guide to Ideology' film showing and discussion set for Feb. 28

Plan for a wildly entertaining romp through the crossroads of cinema and philosophy at "The Pervert's Guide to Ideology" film showing and discussion from 2:30-5:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28, in 1309 Centennial Hall. The new documentary film re-teams cultural theorist Slavoj Žižek with director Sophie Fiennes ("The Pervert’s Guide to Cinema"). With infectious zeal and a voracious appetite for popular culture, Žižek literally goes inside epochal movies to explore and expose how they reinforce prevailing ideologies. As the ideology that undergirds cinematic fantasies is revealed, striking associations emerge: What hidden Catholic teachings lurk at the heart of "The Sound of Music?" What are the fascist political dimensions of "Jaws?" "Taxi Driver," "Zabriskie Point," "The Searchers," "The Dark Knight," and John Carpenter’s "They Live?" Titanic and propaganda epics from Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia all inform Žižek’s stimulating, provocative and often hilarious psychoanalytic-cinematic rant. The film will be followed by a panel discussion including English department faculty Bradley Butterfield, David Hart, Bryan Kopp, Kate Parker, Adam Putz and Rob Wilkie. The event is free and open to the public. To arrange for disability accommodations, contact english@uwlax.edu or call 608.785.8295. For more information, visit http://rhetor.blogs.com/english. UW-L's English department is sponsoring the event. Participate in Jeans Day Friday, Feb. 28; wear LIVEMAROON gear UW-L is one of many local organizations to participate in the monthly “Jeans Day,” sponsored by the La Crosse Tribune. One or two local charities or organizations are designated each month to receive donations. In return for a one dollar, participants may wear jeans. Campus participants should wear LIVEMAROON gear.  The next Jeans Day is Friday, Feb. 28. Donations are welcome even if you don’t wear jeans. This is a small way to join together and give back to the local community. In January UW-L raised $82. The charities receiving the February contributions are Big Brothers Big Sisters of the 7 Rivers Region and La Crosse Youth Symphony Orchestra. Building Contacts:

Hate and bias at UW-L is topic of March 4 open forum

UW-L's Hate Response Team (HRT) will hold a campus-wide open forum to discuss the current state of hate and bias at UW-L from 4-5:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, in 1400 Centennial Hall. The team will present current trends and patterns, lessons learned and ideas for moving forward. The conversation will also include tips for how campus community members can support the mission of HRT, as well as audience questions and comments. In order to prevent hate/bias incidents from creating a hostile environment for any individual or group on campus and interfering with UW-L’s educational mission, HRT believes university and all people of conscience within the campus community must raise their voices in opposition to messages of hate and intolerance, and in support of inclusiveness for all. To learn more about UW-L’s hate/bias response efforts, or to submit a hate/bias incident report, go to www.uwlax.edu/campusclimate/reporthate.htm and www.uwlax.edu/campusclimate/index.htm.
