Girls in Science Program celebrates its 15th year; Boys’ Science Exploration is in its third year
About 75 middle school students from Wisconsin and surrounding states spent a weekend at UW-L to learn more about science and mathematics. For the past 15 years, UW-L’s Continuing Education and the College of Science and Health have partnered to offer a weekend summer program to get middle schoolers excited about science and mathematics in the hope that someday the students will pursue careers in the fields. Recent grad’s business featured on System website
May graduate Wyatt Hrudka discovered a market for single speed bikes while adjusting gears and greasing chains at UW-L’s Outdoor Connection.
With help from his business classes and the Small Business Development Center, Hrudka built a single-speed bike business from the ground up, Wyatt Bicycle Co. Now he’s getting recognized statewide in the UW System initiative, Knowledge Powers Wisconsin.

Summer jazz series continues
The Gertrude Salzer-Gordon Jazz in the Park 2013 Concert Series continues Friday, July 12. The La Crosse Jazz Orchestra presents a mixture of contemporary and traditional big band jazz selections.
Remaining concerts for the series include:
- Friday, July 12 – 7 p.m. Krazy Daze Downtown Street Dance, 100 block of King Street in front of Pump House, Piggy’s and Wine Guyz. For the second annual big band dance, the La Crosse Jazz Orchestra recreates the sounds of Benny Goodman, Glen Miller, the Dorsey's, Count Basie and many others. Along with the swing fox trots of the '40s, the band will play a mixture of Latin, Waltzes, a polka or two, and some rock 'n' roll. The rain site is Cavalier Theater at Fifth and State streets.
- Sunday, July 21 – 5 p.m. Riverside Park
- The Riverside Jazz Party with the La Crosse Jazz Orchestra, guest groups and internationally acclaimed trumpeter and Broadway actor and singer Byron Stripling.
Fundraiser for UW-L retiree Jan Olson's son to be held July 13
UW-L retiree Jan Olson's son, Denae Du Charme, suffered a massive stroke April 2 and is undergoing intensive rehabilitation at Gundersen Health System.
Two fundraiser activities are planned. A benefit to raise funds to help with medical and household bills will be held from 10:30 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday, July 13, at the Coulee Golf Bowl, Onalaska. The fundraiser includes bowling, golfing, silent/live auctions, kids' activities and several bands. Food has been donated for the event.
A Football Mania sweepstakes fundraiser runs for 17 weeks. Each sweepstake entry costs $20, with 70 percent of the raffle ticket price going to the fundraiser. Register now for July 22-23 Wisconsin Science & Technology Symposium
The Sixth Annual Wisconsin Science & Technology Symposium will be held Monday and Tuesday, July 22 and 23, at UW-Superior in the Yellowjacket Union. The event highlights groundbreaking research throughout the state and focuses on collaborative partnerships to accelerate innovative research.
Those planning the symposium expect between 150 to 200 science and technology researchers and representatives from the public sector and industry to attend to share ideas and spark new collaborations. The symposium will showcase cutting-edge research and technology development partnerships among the UW campuses, as well as business and clinical organizations in diverse fields such as biofuels, nanotechnology, novel polymers, pharmaceuticals, digital tools, medical devices and more.
Additional highlights include freshwater research and entrepreneurship/intellectual property workshops; a scientific poster session including faculty and student projects and sponsor exhibits; and ample networking opportunities including an evening cruise and reception on Lake Superior.
The 2013 symposium is organized by WiSys Technology Foundation. Major sponsors include Wisconsin Economic Development Corp., University of Wisconsin System, University of Wisconsin-Superior and WiSys Technology Foundation.
