Rates of rape and sexual assault are four times higher for female students aged 18-24 than for non-students in the age group.
These higher rates of victimization may reflect enduring gender inequalities that exist in higher education and society, say UW-L assistant professors Laurie Cooper Stoll, Sociology/Archaeology; and Terry Glenn Lilley, Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.
Cooper Stoll and Lilley will lead the discussion "Exploring UW-L Undergraduates' Attitudes Towards Rape and Sexual Assault" from 4-5:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, in the Cameron Hall of Nations, Centennial Hall.
Based on findings from a spring 2013 online survey UW-L undergraduate students took, the talk will explore ways gender-blind sexism continues to perpetuate an environment conducive to rape and sexual assault.
The discussion is sponsored by the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Department. For more information, contact Mahruq Khan at mkhan@uwlax.edu.
