Another way students invest in sustainability

Nine tons of waste is transformed into a resource with help from UW-L Green Fund. A student sustainability initiative that started in 2011 has turned tons of UW-La Crosse food waste into high-value soil. Students allocated $17,000 in segregated fees to purchase a vermicomposting system in spring 2011. Through the power of worms, it turns food waste into high-value soil.

Tickets for UW-L Theatre production of ‘These Shining Lives’ on sale Nov. 26

“These Shining Lives” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30 through Saturday, Dec. 1, and Thursday, Dec. 6, through Saturday, Dec. 8. Matinee performances are at 2 o’clock Sundays, Dec. 2, and Dec. 9. All performances will be in Toland Theatre, Center for the Arts.

Graduating seniors to exhibit work at UW-L show

Six UW-La Crosse art students will celebrate the culmination of their undergraduate creative efforts in an upcoming exhibit. “End” is the title of this year’s fall senior exhibition in the University Art Gallery on the first floor of the Center for the Arts. The exhibit opens with a reception from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, and runs through Wednesday, Dec. 12.

Chili cook-off to support local organizations

UW-L students will offer a bowl of chili for a good cause, just in time as the weather turns cooler. Ten challengers will compete in the 2012 Coulee Region Chili Challenge from 5:30-9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Eagle’s Nest, 1914 Campbell Road.

Multi-talented Dessa to speak at UW-L

A woman known for being a writer, spoken word artist, rapper, producer and journalist is coming to UW-La Crosse. The artist Dessa will give a talk at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, in Valhalla, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition.

Campus authors wanted for Celebration of Campus Authors event; deadline to apply is Dec. 10

UW-L faculty, staff, and retirees who have written a book during the last five years (including 2009-13) are invited to showcase their work at the 2013 Celebration of Campus Authors.

State Rep. to speak about overcoming barriers

A Texas state representative will speak about her experiences overcoming barriers and representing the LGBTIQQAA community in the legislature during a UW-La Crosse lecture at 4 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3, in 1400 Centennial Hall.

'The Bro Code: How Contemporary Culture Creates Sexist Men' to be shown Nov. 26

The film "The Bro Code: How Contemporary Culture Creates Sexist Men" takes aim at the forces in male culture that condition boys and men to dehumanize and disrespect women. "The Bro Code" will be shown at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26, in the Ward Room, Cartwright Center. Free popcorn will be available. A discussion will follow the free showing of the film. In "The Bro Code" filmmaker Thomas Keith breaks down a range of contemporary media forms that are saturated with sexism — movies and music videos that glamorize misogyny, pornography that trades in the brutalization of women, comedy routines that make fun of sexual assault, and a slate of men's magazines and cable TV shows whose sole purpose is to revel in reactionary myths of American manhood. By showing how there's nothing natural or inevitable about this mentality, and by setting it against the terrible reality of men's violence against women in the real world, "The Bro Code" challenges young people to step up and fight back against the idea that being a real man means disrespecting women. Jeans Day is Friday, Nov. 30

UW-L is one of many local organizations that participate in the monthly “Jeans Day” sponsored by the La Crosse Tribune. One or two local charities or organizations are designated each month to receive our donations. In return for a $1 (suggested donation) UW-L employees may wear jeans to work Friday, Nov. 30. You may contribute even if you don’t wear jeans.  Let’s show our community how generous we can be! Students to lead a ‘mob’ of a local business

A UW-L economics class plans to “mob” a local business in an effort to promote the importance of supporting local business. Principles of Sustainable Business students will hold the university’s first ever Cash Mob on a local downtown business at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1. The target business of the mob is a secret but will be revealed to those joining the group (open to all) at the State Bank Parking Lot, 401 Main St. “Mobsters” should bring a few dollars to spend to be a part of the fun. A Cash Mob is an event to encourage a large group of people to spend money “en masse” at a small, local business, says Economics Professor Donna Anderson. She says the group also hopes “to provide an economic stimulus to the owner, raise awareness of the importance of buying local, promote community cohesion, and have loads of fun while doing it.” Following the mobbing of the local business, participants will be invited to join an "After Mob" event for a drink to support a local restaurant. Annual Swinging Yuletide set at UW-La Crosse

The annual Swinging Yuletide will return to UW-La Crosse for an upbeat performance of big band and vocal jazz holiday favorites. The concert will feature the LA CROSSE JAZZ ORCHESTRA, UW-L instrumental and vocal jazz ensembles, and La Crosse jazz combos. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, in Valhalla, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition. Santa Claus is expected to make an appearance. The show is a sell out every year so buying tickets early is suggested. Admission is $5 for students and $10 for others. Reserved tickets with table seating are $20. Sign up now for UW-L Youth Sports Camp; enrollment is limited

UW-L is offering an action-packed sports camp for children ages 5-12 during the holiday break. The camp runs from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, and Friday, Dec. 28, in Mitchell Hall. Drop off children from 8-9 a.m. Pick them up between 4-5 p.m. Lori Petersen, a Physical Education Teacher Education faculty member, and volunteer students from physical education and other majors on campus lead the camp. Children can participate in age-appropriate activities in both competitive and non-competitive groups. Cost for those who register by Monday, Dec. 17, is $25 per day. OCW Holiday Social set for Dec. 5

UW-L’s Organization for Campus Women is hosting a Holiday Social for the campus community from 11:15 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, in the Cameron Hall of Nations, Centennial Hall. Children from the Campus Child Care Center will sing at 11:30 a.m. OCW will provide refreshments, appetizers and desserts, along with door prizes.   UW-L's OCW Book Club is reading Ann Patchet's book "Bel Canto" and will discuss it at noon Thursday, Jan. 17, in Murphy's Mug. Participation in the OCW Book Club is open to all faculty, staff and students.
