Nobel Prize Winner gives public lecture Oct. 10

Image of David Wineland A recent Nobel Prize Winner who studies a mysterious world where particles don’t behave according to the classic laws of physics will visit UW-La Crosse in October. David Wineland, 2012 Nobel Prize Winner in physics, will give a public lecture “Superposition, Entanglement and Raising Schrodinger’s Cat” at 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, in  Skogen Auditorium A, room 1400 Centennial Hall. He’ll also present a physics seminar, join students in physics classes and meet with faculty and staff. Read more »

Army looking to end UW-L ROTC program

Photo of ROTC group getting ready for an inspection. The U.S. Army has notified UW-L it plans to phase out the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program on campus. In a letter to UW-L Thomas R. Lamont, Assistant Secretary of the Army, says “The Army arrived at this difficult decision after careful consideration of how best to accomplish its mission with a reduction of resources.” The effective date of closure will be the end of the 2014-15 academic year. Read more »

Film capturing value of educating girls worldwide will be shown on campus

Girl with chalice in traditional clothing. Sokha was a Cambodian child of the dump: orphaned and forced to pick through garbage to survive. But she found her way to school and became a star student. Sokha is one of nine girls in unforgiving circumstances featured in the film “Girl Rising.” The film, which captures their dreams, their voices and their lives, will be shown on campus on Friday, Oct. 11 — the International Day of the Girl. Read more »

Give now! Campus United Way campaign underway

United Way photo. Did you know the cost of two sodas a week donated to Great Rivers United Way could provide 60 warm meals this year to someone in need? The campus United Way campaign has kicked off and will run through November. All employees are being sent, via campus mail, a United Way brochure and copies of pledge forms. Read more »

Prep for Success set for Oct. 8

Learn about the job search, interviewing and what to expect in a professional position at Prep for Success. The free event will be held from 6:30-7:30p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, in 1400 Centennial Hall. Panelists will include:

Fall Career Expo set for Oct. 9

Connect with prospective employers at the Fall Career Expo from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, in Valhalla, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition. The Career Expo is open to students of all academic levels. Explore careers and part-time employment as well as internship opportunities and full-time employment. More than 60 employers will be represented. Tips for the event:
  • Dress professionally
  • Prioritize list of employers
  • Bring resumes if you want to seek an internship or full-time employment
  • Greet employers with a smile and a firm handshake
  • Be ready with questions
  • Ask for a business card
  • Follow up

Public forum Oct. 9 to discuss government shutdown and more

Two UW-L political science assistant professors will lead "The State of Congress and American Politics: A Public Forum" at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, in the Cameron Hall of Nations, Centennial Hall. Tim Dale and Jacob Holt will talk about the government shutdown, frustrations with Congress and the president, making sense of federal budgets and the debt ceiling, and political posturing. The event is free and open to the public.

Planetarium Public Program resumes; Rolling Stones is featured band at Oct. 11 Album Encounters

The Planetarium’s Public Program for October  is "Two Small Pieces of Glass."  The talk, followed by a multimedia audiovisual presentation, will be at 1 p.m. Saturdays in October. Admission is $3 for students, seniors and children, and $5 for others. The Album Encounters multimedia light and laser show will feature Rolling Stones’ “Hot Rocks”at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, in 20 Cowley Hall. Admission is $5. The Awareness through Performance (ATP) fall 2013 encore production of "Breaking the Silence" is set for 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 14 , in Valhalla, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition. The show is free and open to the public. ATP is an alternative outlet for social activism on campus. The troupe is comprised of students who share a passion for diversity and social justice issues, and a desire to further explore the dynamics of how these issues shape the world. Participants hope to positively impact the campus climate by affecting attitudes and behaviors and enhancing cross-cultural awareness. For more information, visit www.uwlax.edu/campusclimate/atp.

Regional biophysics research groups will be on campus for a Biophysical Society Networking event Saturday, Oct. 19. The event provides an opportunity to talk and hear about science, initiate or strengthen collaborations, and increase awareness of biophysics in the area. UW-L research students are invited to show off their work at a poster session.  The event also includes talks, workshops and a career panel discussion on molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry and biophysics.  Organizers are expecting more than 100 people from outside the UW-L community including several groups from the University of Minnesota, Mayo Clinic, UW-Madison and other area colleges. Many of the talks will focus on research, but some will focus on teaching and networking, including a modeling workshop for educators.
